I have always recorded with a drummer, but now I am wanting to try using a drum machine because drummers are always slim in my area. Does anyone know what is the best drum machine I can get for the price? Thanks!

What kind of music, what kind of budget, and what will you be recording to?

I have a lot of good sounding wav. drum samples on my computer and I also need a drum machine so that I can import them and create tracks. I was going to use Leaf Drums, but apparently it's not available for download any more. Does anyone know of a free program that I can download?

well, i've always been into hard rock, but we are going through a big sound change and experimenting with jazz and hip-hop. Someone suggested I try a software like FL Studio. I just need something where I can map out simple beats and change it up where I need to. Nothing fancy. What do you suggest?

Have you looked at Toontrack EZ Drummer? I don't have it but is seems to have decent sounding samples and you can trigger the samples via midi as well.

my 2 cents

I can tell you what I did, and you can decide.

I've always played hard rock, too( See this and this).

When I quit playing in a band I built a small room in my garage to write some acoustic songs. After a short time I thought it would be a good idea to have a drum machine to have something where I can map out simple beats and change it up where I need to. Nothing fancy. I bought an Alesis SR-16. About the most basic drum machine out there. Cheap, too. Then I ended up with a full blown studio in the room I built.

I quickly learned that a drum machine for that particular style of music didn't work. I ended up buying a set of drums to record acoustic drum parts and learned how to play them.

I still use the Alesis for a click track when I record the drum tracks, and as a novelty in a couple of newer songs.

Tough call.
