OK - here's my drum set:

I'm seeking general advice -- I would *prefer* advice from someone with credentials, like Dr. Zaragemca, but I'll take what I can get. I want to be ready for some recitals when we're allowed to go back to Galveston.

This kid who lives in my house was in band when he was in third grade, and opted to play the drums -- we had to rent a snare, and found out that it was like $20 more to just buy it, so we did. It also came with a nifty xylophone (not pictured) that you use the same stand for. He opted to play guitar and bagpipes later, so I recently re-discovered and deployed this awesome snare.

I got the cymbal for about $17 at GC a few months ago (it's a "12 in. Chinese" cymbal), and recently, the MF stupid buy was for $30 cymbal stands -- so now I'm in business.

Is the cymbal upside down? Should the label be facing up or down?

I also have drum sticks that work:

You got your snare upside down fella. Also, that looks like a Jazz chinese cymbal, so you couldn't play rock with it. When you say 'recital', are you playing country or western?

Dude the snare is the right way round and the cymbal is a china. I have seen drummers have it either way. The way you have it now is more prone to thrashing your sticks a bit especially if your heavy handed.

And since I'm getting real help here and nobody's making fun of me (yet), let me go for broke:

Does it make sense to build a drum set a piece at a time like this? I use sample drums in most of my recordings, but I recently recorded the snare (Audix I5 on top and modded SM81 on bottom) and replaced a sampled snare track. It sounded good, because the room sound on the snare matched the room sound on the other instruments in the song.

So... I have one of those cheapo yamaha drum sample trigger things, with pedals -- maybe I can set that up along with the snare and cymbal, and make hybrid tracks? I saw a high hat setup in a pawnshop once -- I'll look for another one over time. I have no drum playing skill to speak of, but that's where I'm hoping Dr. Z can help me out.

Absolutely. You can pick pieces that accord with both your budget and the sounds you're looking for. The only worry you might have is matching kick drum tom mounting to toms of different brands. But there's always a hardware solution.

Again, absolutely. In fact, why are you wasting time here on this? Just DO IT! :D

sweet. Today's stupid buy was a cymbal clamp/arm for $20, so I picked one up.

OK - today I picked up a beat up high hat assembly and a set of roto-toms and a sweet agogo bell for about $150.

The hi hat stand and cymbals are kind of dirty and the hihat cymbals are a little corroded. I wiped off the stand with 90% isopropyl alcohol, and (and I should have asked before I did this) I sprayed some silicone lubricant on the post that goes up and down.

Is it safe to wipe off the cymbals with alcohol?

sorry

ok man, hmm... not to be mean or anything but what is your budget for your set? Or are you making it up as you go along? No offense juste asking?

I'm absolutely making it up as I go along, and don't have a budget. No offense taken, and I realize I'm leading with the chin a bit -- it's just that I have a gaping hole in my home recording set up (both equipment and skills) when it comes to drums and it puts a damper on the whole experience, and so I thought I'd document my block-headed saga with this thread. Feel free to ignore/ridicule as needed :) I was really hoping to get some help from Dr. Z, since we live in the same city, but I'll take what I can get :D And... surprisingly perhaps, the posts in this thread have been genuinely helpful (the surprise for me being both the kindness and patience of the posters, and the surprise for them perhaps being that I'm actually ignorant enough to benefit from very elementary tips -- maybe that's not a surprise, though :D )

Sorry...
that was my evil twin posting.

I've killed him.

:D

Actually, I just like the little green smiley dude. He reminds me of me.
:D

I am Zaragemca's evil twin. My dad used to live in Havana (he really did!). I've even got a Cuban conga in my living room. Hmm... the parallels are many and they are chilling.
