Hey guys...

HELP!

My band is undertaking the recording of our own album...its going to be a bitch to say the least...I need some input on my drum mixing style before we get too far into the process...

Tell me what you think of this sample and what you think would be helpful to make it sound a little more professional...(please spare musicality as I still have a lot of editing to do here.)

Anything will help...any tips whatsoever. I will be forever greatful!

Thanks,

James

It's hard to tell without hearing the drums in a mix.

...True...LOL...but no one is here to track and I am getting a little restless...

It sounds like it's just two OH's? The positioning needs to be adjusted, as it sounds like the toms are WAY behind the kick, snare, and cymbals. It depends on what style you are after, but you may look into the Glynn John's method if you can do 4 mic's at once.

You hit the one of the mics near the begining. I don't have quicktime pro so I can't download it and tell you at what time it is but I know its on the second snare and splash hit when you go in your first beat after the fill in the intro. It sounds like its on a snare mic so I'm assuming there is one.

Your not using that many cymbals and the toms and snare are a main focus in this track, so I might suggest trying the recorderman overhead technique. I feel like the snare is a little left with the overheads panned and this will put it in phase and in center. I would also turn the snares down on the snare. I feel like the lowest tom is tuned a bit too low or is muted by muting ring that is just killing it. I also feel like all the toms need to be tuned to themselves. Is the bass drum miced?

Yes the kick drum is miced...

How exactly do you pan the oh's when you don't place them left and right...I have heard of putting one over the snare and one over the drummers right shoulder...but how do you pan them?

Also:

With the mics in this placement will I want to use the pad and/or lo rolloff at all?

Thanks guys!
