Drum clip. Let me know what you think...

not a bad sound, but the snare is definitely the worst part of it. maybe eq?
 
I like it. Very roomy sounding, maybe slightly too much.

I agree that the snare is the weakest link.

What did you use for over heads & Kick?
 
i like the snare when it is played in a beat but when its in a fill its lacking high end or something
 
I think the toms sound killer! What sizes are they? How are they tuned?

You should give us a little info on your mic setup.
 
The snare sound like a sample to me. Something like using drumagog. Did you use it?. Maybe the sound is a little bright, but it´s a matter of taste.

You're a pretty good drummer. The only thing I didn't like was the kick drum. I thought it was pretty weak, no low end. It almost sounds like a wooden block.

Thanks. I'm very glad someone mentioned that, because I am a John Bonham freak, and had to tune all my drums excactly like his. I have 12, 13, and 16 inch toms. I use a 1984 premier drumset, with powertoms, but they are much much deeper than powertoms today. I tune the bottom head much higher to give it a resonant sound and much deeper sounding. The reverb you hear is mostly from my recording program, just because it makes it sound more like John Bonham. My snare came with the set as well(premier). It is 12 by 6.5 which is nice because so was bonhams, although he used a ludwig supraphonic.

Im glad someone brought this up as well. I bought all remo heads (all john bonhams heads) till my dad recently got sponsered with aquarian so I got a aquarian batter on my snare and aquarian superkick for the bass drum, although I still have remos on the resonant sides. I think my bass drum sounds like a basketball bouncing at first. I have almost no bass and all treble on it but never thought of it as an issue because it standed out more this way. I will definately fix that in the morning.

What should I do with the snare drum? I am completely open for any suggestions. I recently started listening to a lot of Warrent and I like their sounds altogether but drums in particular, but that is mainly a big, 80's sound.
 
Oh, and mics...
one PG 52 for the kick
three PG56’s for the toms
one SM57 for the snare
two PG 81s for use as overhead, but Im getting by OK with 1 overhead, as one isnt working. Ill try a new battery tomorrow, but since I dont have room on my drum mixer, ill have to use a Y cable.
 
Dude! You're good! I thought it was a good clip too. Well mixed. On the kick n snare, the only thing I thought of was placement. Where are they placed? Sounds like maybe the kick mic could come out a bit but I dunno. And maybe a skosh of bottom eq to the snare. But again, I dunno. Yours sounds better than mine so maybe I'll just grab another beer and shaddap... :D
 
Well I had to move my rototoms the other day and all my mics have been moved so Im going to go out there and see if I can get everything soundin good again..
 
I think they sound good. Nice playing as well. The only thing I dont like is that reverb. Thats personal though. It's something that always bugs me when I hear reverb on drums. Makes them sound fake to me. A little on the snare I can handle,..but most of the time not even that.
It's hard to say though if they would work in a given mix. They sound good on their own,..but,..well,..who knows what you would have to change as you start adding other instruments. That being said though,..getting things to sound good FIRST,..by themselves is always a good place to start in my opinion.

You should listen to some Warrant. The drums on the cherry pie album have extreme reverb-i like it. IMO, it depends what you are playing. All my drums are tuned and miced like bonham's but since I dont have his 26 inch bass drum, i add a little reverb and make it sound bigger, but the all around reverb was basically expierimental.

Overall I though the sound was excellent, but the timing was out a couple of times near the beginning!

The kick drum could do with a little more low end but it had excellent attack. Move the mic away from the batter side and you will get more boom but less click. The snare sounded OK but I thought the snare wires sounded too tight - Bonham kept them just touching the head in no more!

So many drummers tighten the snare wires so tight (to stop them buzzing?) that it chokes the sound of the drum and sounds aweful.

Your quadruplets and broken triplets on the kick drum were awesome. If you done those quads with one foot then you are amazing!

You can hear a few clips of me here. Timing and sound quality vary from one clip to the next though! :eek:

The track called "Messin around on the kit" is probably the best in terms of sound quality. :cool:

Well I am partly glad someone noticed the mistakes at the beginning. It was supposed to be a mic check but I was having fun with it so I kept going. You are right about my snare, how its basically chocked off all the way. It is because of the buzzing. I practice with 6 bands and all the buzzing from my snare drives me insane because of the bassists and guitarists. I have a double bass pedal but I like staying with single just because I try to fully immitate bonham. That track was with a single pedal so they might be a little weaker.
