is a Dixie Dreggs wanna be
This ought to get you guys going.

Okay, I'll bite

I haven't heard as much of the Dregs' stuff as DT's, but what I've heard I liked very much. But I also like DT very much. If DT had more of a country-jazz influence in their music, I could almost agree with you. As it is, I think DT's focus is quite different, and I'd almost bet that they have a ton of respect for the Dregs.

Okay, sorry I couldn't be inflammatory, but it's only 6:20 a.m. here, and I'm at a desk instead of a bed :( . I'm sure somebody will get all irate, however, so don't worry. ;) :D :p

Wasn't Steve Morse one of influences of John Petrucci? Steve Morse was, and still is one of the shredders.

Of course I'm only Kidding, pull me under boys.

Kelly 5150, I think you better listen to the Dreggs again, maybe you were to young to Understand.

I'm not impressed with Dream Theatre. I am impressed with the Dreggs.

Mike Portnoy went to high school with me and I jammed with him a few times. He was not even close to the best drummer in my school and didn't impress me as even mediocre at the time.

I think that he's improved a lot since then, but he isn't as phenomonal as DT fans say he is.

As for the structure of DT tunes, I find them to be rambling chord changes designed to provide soloing beds for fast yet uninspired playing.

Of course, that's just my opinion.

Didn't the Dreggs drummer end up in Winger?and if so,how does such a thing happen?

I guess our opinions are based off of whether we like Southern shred or progressive metal/rock. I personally like DT more than the dreggs although I do enjoy some of Steve Morse's work (especially with Dave Lurue).

As far as Portnoy goes, many people seem to not dig him too much. I think he is amazing personally. I just like his style as far as rock goes.

As far as their self indulgent solos, when I am in the mood they are the best, many bands try to copy their stlye and fail miserably.

Of course I am a biased DT fan:)

Well, I'm a dyed in the wool prog rock fan. I have every ELP, YES, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull and Frank Zappa album. I also love Spock's beard, Grey Lady Down and the Flower Kings.

The music that I write is prog rock and I believe I'm quite good at it.

I find Dream Theater to be contrived and not very musical.

Again, that's me and my taste, but I'll listen to Kansas, Crimson or Traffic before the Dreggs.
