DR-40 Rec input issue

Have been using a DR-40 for years to record live shows, rehearsals, etc.
Get excellent recordings.
Suddenly, I can no longer adjust the recording level and everything is distorting. Used to adjust the record level by simply using the +/- control on the left side, after pressing record. That now doesn't seem to function.

I would remove the batteries and try it next day, digital gear can lockup. If no joy check the book, there might be a "factory state reset" or a pinhole to a reset button.

I have the manual for the DR-22WL on file and page 16 gives the MO to "change the recorder to default settings".
Worth a try?
