Check out Hammerhead:

Not as feature packed as Fruity Loops (which it inspired), but it is FREEWARE. It comes with a utility for building your own kits...and it's dead easy to use.

You might also look at Computer Music magazine's free SR-202. It's a VST instrument that you can load into Cubase or Logic, or any sequencer that can use a VST 2.0 wrapper. I don't know if you can download it , but, since its release, it is usually on the cover cd that comes with each issue of Computer Music.

Reason is awesome, but when you consider the price, Fruity Loops is very competitive...plus you can use directX and VST plug ins in Fruity Loops....I wouldn't get Reason just to use the REDRUM module....if you are using a sequencer, a plug in drum machine is the way to go: DR-005 (freeware , I believe) or DR-008 from Fxpansion, Native Instrument's Battery , Steinberg's LM-4, Waldorf Attack, or the freebie SR-202. Linplug also has couple of drum modules.
