Today I sold some of my stuff to a friend. In all honesty I don't think I've reached the point where I'm ready for it yet.

I sold:

EZDrummer - $100
Reason 3.0 - $300

I kept my Waves Reverb, just couldn't let that go. ;)

That's $400 I can put towards a new acoustic.

I feel I was not able to get a good enough recorded sound that could come anywhere close to comparing with the sounds of EZDrummer and Reason.

Just sounded like an acoustic guitar playing over a really nice sounding backing track. :(

So anyway, now I'm looking for some FREE plug-ins to mess around with and learn how to use.

I need a very basic drum VSTi. It'd be nice if I could use my own samples (like nsKit, etc.).

I can probably find some replacements for Reason (obviously not as good) for strings, organs, etc. on KVRAudio.com

But for drums, I don't know. I tried searching on here, and surprisingly I only came across a few (OLD) threads about free drums. Where did they all go?

Anyway, anyone know of a good FREE drum VSTi that either has decent samples or lets me choose my own?

EZDrummer was really...easy, and all I had to do was load it up and play. So I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to drum programs.

The FXpansion DR005 is cool, but the link at KVR is dead.I don't think FXpansion gives it away anymore.I have the RAR file somewhere, if you're interested.

Yes I tried that and it didn't work. If you have the RAR file that would be awesome.

SAMPLE YOUR DRUMS OFF OF OLD VINYL BREAKBEATS, NOTHING SOUNDS BETTER,, NOT LIVE NOT NOTHING.

AND IF THINGS ARE TOO COMPLEX BETTER TO DOWNSIZE AND CONCENTRATE ON YOUR MUSIC NOT ALL THE "NEW TECHNOLOGY" THAT DOESN'T AMOUNT TO SH1T, EXCEPT FUN GAGDETS FOR TECHIES.

Yea guess I could sample my own sounds. Don't really feel like it though. I rarely have drums in my songs and that seems like too much work considering that.

Yea, it's nice having good software with all the options, but sometimes it's just too many options. I'd rather focus on just writing/recording songs. And have only a few decent sounds (strings, organ, etc.) rather than a whole library where it takes too long sorting through them all and learning how to use everything.

Oh i see, yeah it could be a hassle to hunt down breakbeats and chop them up if you don't use drums too often...

even though reaper is advertised as being easy to use, from what I've read Tracktion is probably even easier...I'm actually talking to myself, still seeing if I can talk myself into trying out a daw...

Does it need to be specifically a drum sampler VSTi...couldn't you use a freeware soundfont player (like SFZ) and make your own kit in soundfont format using the NsKit?

Another possibility is to get Computer Music magazine (it's a British mag, but you can buy in the US @ Border's Bookstore). On the cover DVD they have a whole suite of freeware they call the CM Studio. Included is the SR-202 Drum Machine VSTi and DS-404 sampler VSTi. You should be able to build kits with your samples with either of these two pieces of freeware. You just need to buy the magazine. It also has a few good VST synths and effects.

I'd use it mainly for drums, but also being able to load other samples would be nice (I guess just loading any WAV samples and assingning the to a key on the MIDI keyboard).

I'd rather be able to load individual WAV files than have to use a SoundFont.

Then I highly recommend finding and buying CM magazine and using their Drum Sampler and Instrument Sampler. Very good apps for the price, FREE, well you do have to factor in the cost of the magazine. They also come with some basic sounds to get started.

Thanks, but are there any samplers you know of where I don't have to order a magazine? :p

I'm really just looking for something simple. I load in WAV files. I assign them to a key on the MIDI keyboard. I play them.

Thanks for the suggestion though I'll keep that in mind if I can't find anything else.

I tried something called Paax 2 and it wasn't too bad, a little confusing though.

what was that program where you can make your own drum sounds....

danny, theres some talk in the reaper forum, and on reaperchat of setting up a track template, or perhaps another instance of reaper ReaRouted to make a combination of a bfd style + drumagog type deal. Scott stillwell's drum trig and randomizer will both make sure it wont play the same samples twice in a row, so it will sound more realistic than bfd or dfh, much more so...Ive got the samples to do this with, Im just waiting on a battery cell type free VST-i to test it with

Danny, what build of Reaper are you using?I have 1.822 on this piece of shit computer, and the dr005 seems to run OK.
