Double mic's on guitar?

I've read a number of threads here talking about using two mics on guitar and panning them hard left and right to get a bigger sound. Will this work if your guitar amp is a 1x12" combo or do you need an amp/speaker cabnet with more than one speaker. Any recomendation on mic placement for the 1x12 if this is something I should attempt. Will this technique give the guitar a bigger sound at live gigs through a stereo PA too?

This is primarily an acoustic micing technique, I believe??

I would agree w/ Pete and say that the technique you are talking about is generally done w/ acoustic guitars. Some people will mic an amp w/ two mics, but this is generally to blend the different sounds rather than achieve the big sound........if you're looking for a bigger sound, play the part twice and pan them to each side.......what you were talking about could technically be done, but isn't a common practice.....

I just want to say make you record the part twice and pan. I tried just copying the same part and that didn't do crap.

Chew's got a good point.

To get the fuller sound, re-record the guitar part and pan them and maybe introduce them at different points in the song.

Of course, it can also be useful to use two mics on an acoustic in different places. maybe one close mic'ed and one two to three feet away, then blend them together. Have fun experimenting....

A cool way I found to mic acoustic is to have one pointed at the sound hole and the other more towards the neck. You could even add the signal from a pickup to the other two. It's all fun.
