Dan Richards of Soundpure recently spent a lot of time counselling me on my next purchase. We emailed, talked on the phone, and analyzed MY needs and what I was trying to accomplish.
He ended up suggesting a Brauner Phantom C and a Phoenix DRS 1. I bought the Brauner from him at a great price and found a "like new" Phoenix for $900.
Dot said jump on it!
I then e mailed Shaun at Phoenix to check warranty. He assured me that the warranty stayed with preamp, not the buyer and he just fixed a four year old unit and charged the customer only shipping!
I commend (and recommend) both of these guys for any and all counsel you may need on your gear, recording method or use of equipment.
I have seldom run into friendlier or more competent guys in this business (okay Warhead and PMI)
Soooooooooo
Thanks to Phoenix and DOT
I only wish I could have found you guys sooner and saved some money on all that mid level gear (which by the way is on sale in the gear forum....SPAM ALERT)

Congrats, BK. You scored bigtime--with the help of some nice people.

Kenny,

So how does the combo sound?? I have the Phoenix and like what I have heard of the Brauner.

It's like butta, I just finished a vocal track and for the first time ever used no eq!

That may well be my next acquisition. This was my first "upper level" mic.
I can only compare it to my AT 4033, Rode NTK, GT MD1B, senn441, re20 and sm7. Wait, no I can't, there isn't any. It's that clean. No hypes, just full reproduction. I do need to look at compression and eq now.

Oh, I thought I remembered you having the R84.

I have a couple 4033's, and an NTK, and had a u89 for a while, but I didn't see THAT much of an improvement over the NTK. I want to get one really good silky smooth mic for really warm smooth vocals (not the growling rock vocals I mostly do now). I was thinking the R84 would fit the bill, but you got my curiosity up with the Brauner.

Dan and the guys at SoundPure have been a big help to me as well. I seriously appreciate a business that will take time to listen and offer recommendations. (It also helps that they know what they're talking about and have actually USED the stuff...)
