Interesting little tip in this month's EM. I wish EM would do more stuff like this -- it's so easy to understand. No DB's or bit rates; no DA or AD; no templates; JUST AN EASY TIP.

Here it is. Are you ready for this?

Instead of a popper stopper, or a nylon, or any other devious device developed by the devotees of this site, EM suggests you can merely tape a pencil in the middle of the vocal mic to avoid explosives from your singer....

EM said it was an old trick used for a long time. I've never seen anyone mention that on this site unless I missed that post.

I think I'll buy a divining rod and see what happens.

if your singer has EXplosives, you have alot more problems than you think......:eek: :D ;) :p

I work with a gal who has fair mic technique but she tends to get loud too close to the mic, etc.

She will flip out the next time we do something as I'm going to insert the pencil.

On the other hand, I've worked with a few professionals who have expert mic technique -- they've been in more than one studio. Talent is wonderful. But, the passion and love of the musical form is just as important.

Plosives in English are those powerful bursts of air coming mostly from the mouth whilst singing.

Harvey Gerst posted the pencil trick here a LONG time ago. It's a decnt tip none the less.
 
I don't understand the whole DIY pop shield BS. The last time I bought a pop shield (a few months ago) it was less than $10 and works great.

One thing I like about pop shields is that it prevents the singer from getting too close to the mic.

I like to keep the spit off the capsule too. the pensil doesnt do that.

Good point...if the singer rests his chin against it and remains there it creates a consistant level if they are'nt moving in & out from the mic, which means less work in the end to get a proper balance on the vocal track.

pencils would be better because the wood absorbes the 'plosives better than plastic...

Tip - (altough its just personal preference, take it to heart or not.......all your choice.):

Always place the microphone in front of a singer's mouth - never behind his / her ass:rolleyes:
 
Another reason to use a windscreen instead of a pencil - the windscreen acts as a spit/moisture filter as well. That junk will ruin a capsule over time.
