mixmkr -that's what I was waitin' for! thanks. I just put up yet another vocal mix and lowered the vocals a bit already.. I couldn't take the loud mix... I didn't forget about your tune, I'll be speaking of it shortly.. I'm suprised you didn't like the drums...I was thinking they were the best I did so far

As far as the ending, the feeling you described, was the exact feeling I got when it was over...'what happened?' I think i was trying to leave it not so neatly wrapped up.... like indifferent but hopeful I don't know... I must have done 100 bong hits while recording this one And about that wimpish thing, I thought the heavy part would make up for it, but I guess it's a bit tooo soft at the beginning..... i think the wimpyness might come from the vocals..... I expected much more brutality.... oh well..

no..I think you can still have wimpy instruments...like your ac. gtr, and the strings and stuff...but nothing wrong with having a killer, kick ass drum sound (yeah..we all want that...right??), to back them up...of course, tamed volume wise too. see what I'm trying to say... Then.......the whamo stuff happens...and it goes up a notch, even higher. The playing of the drums is fine...or programming..or your kit kats..whatever you use.. They just sound dull with no resonance to them. Maybe we both need an Alesis DM5 or a Neil Pert in our back pockets.

on the ending...stick something on it....even a friggin pan flute...hey...wind chimes ....ya know...just something... It needs a musical progressive element happening too...even as it fades...and maybe a nice looooooooong fade too..

hey mixmkr, I sold my Alesis DM5 and put the money towards the new module.(Roland TD-8.) The drums are usually always played live... I rarely ever use a drum machine... Just wanted to make sure you knew that they weren't programmed.... I played the drumpads and they are set up like a regular drumset...... Maybe I should add something to the end..... I really thought that helped with the whole 'personality disorder' feel of the tune.... I purposely left it more open than normal.... I appreciate (as always) the commentary.... You know music, that's for sure..BUT I'm not sure you can relate to the 'slightly insane' aspect of my tunes... Be glad you don't.. It's not a pretty place and there are not many windows... I'm going to be trying to make me new songs more consistent....Like 1 musical style per song.. Your ears are appreciated over here dude!! I remixed the vocals to that song AGAIN very late last night... I raised them a bit in spots and lowered them in others.... thx mix!

Allright, I've listened to your latest mix; Here goes:

1. I like the intro piano part. Cool chording with a nice mix of bass lines against what the top is doing..nice.

2. I like the drumming, some guys don't like the sound but I come from the school of thinking that there are MANY different ways for drums to sound, all of them good. If it doesn't suck then it's good in its' own way. That doesn't mean drums never sound bad to me; just that they don't have to fit some narrow definition of what they should sound like for me to like them. And when I say I like them, mostly I mean I like the playing which leads to.....

3. The vocals..sigh. I can't tell how well you sing because of the processing (BTW what kind of processing ARE you using on the vocals) but as I said earlier, your vocals on THAT song are appropriate and fit well as far as I can hear. Now maybe on another song where you don't use processing I might see what you're talking about and go, Whoa! That sucks; but not on this tune. It really fits pretty well and I'm not an idiot about this. I have a lot of years playing and recording and listening. On this song, at least, you can relax about the vocals. I like them much better up in the mix.

4. The ending would be Ok if there was a little more going on. A sax (Hey I'll do one for you) or a pretty melodic guitar would help top it off.

So, one more time, I like the damn song.

Shit! You're my god! That production is by far the best I've heard from you so far! Those guitars are just so evil. The song is way weird, but I don't think nothing should be left out. I've come to expect some good stuff from you, and you didn't fail this time either.

The drums are awesome. Soundfont? Drum-machine? There's a bit too much bass-frequencies in the overall mix, but not much. I don't mind the singing. Maybe too much effects, but it fits the mood, so I really can't complain. Just awesome stuff. You've really got some better gear this time, I guess. Awesome.

even though I gave a very specific idea on how "I" might go about improving the drum sound, I agree 100% with Lt. Bob on this statement. To have to keep in a narrow vision is not good, imo.

sabbath...I am aware you play the drums 'live' too....and I'm just critisizing your stuff, because you "beg" for it...and I love giving it to you!!! Your level of quality is very high to me, and you have to nit-pick to find faults. <-----remember that last statement for future reference...and I think most would agree with that also. Shoot...you've become Cranky 1's God now...and his stuff rocks some serious booty. Damn, coming from him is a serious compliment.
Now...go fix that INSANE (with no windows) ending section!!

Hey Lt. Bob, do it up!!! Put a sax solo all over that outro!! Can you just do it from this copy? I don't have any crazy computer files to send... That would be very cool... Now that I'm thinking about it, that also gives me another idea........... If you wanted to record some sax to a metronome or drum machine, then make a stereo mix of just the saxophone, I could take it and make a song around it.....possibly a different type of sax song could come out of it.... a heavier one, but without the ska......perhaps sadder?!?.....I don't know.... let me know what you think.

Cool idea!

That sounds interesting! I could do that and yes I could do a sax line over your Mp3. I'll just burn it to cd, carry it back to my studio gear and then send it back the same way. If it was cool enough to go further we could go from there. Same with the idea of just sending a sax line. I'd like to do that. I'll get to work on that tomorrow nite! As for the sax line, instead of recording the sax in stereo, how about if I put a drum track or metronome (that's a little guy who lives in the subway ) on one channel and the sax on the other channel so you would have the click track to use for your timing and then erase it when you had your own drums on it. Then you could use your 'verb to give the sax a room sound 'cause that would be the main point of recording in stereo.
And there might be a way to do it with higher quality files if it sounded like something we wanted to pursue. Lets say you took a rhythym track and mailed me that on cd. Then I could put horn on it and send it back with the rhythym on one channel and the sax on the other. If you could figure a way to sync the rhythym track with the original tracks, then you could erase the mono rhythym mixdown and all you would have left would be the sax line in sync with the other tracks.
This'll be cool!

Cranky One - WOW!! After hearing your tunes, that is a comment and a half! thanks... I think you hear the heavy part differently than most around here because you actually listen to heavier music like I do... Your comments have great impact.... As far as the drums, I played drumpads hooked up to a Roland TD-8. I punched several times...it took me well over 100 takes to play the drum beats.... I originally recorded the guitar to different drum machine beats. I then muted the drum machine beat, and played drums along to just the guitars.... I added synth bass after for some reason....I think because I have to intonate my bass, and i was tooo lazy to do it at that time.... I didn't compress the drums at all... I just kept looking for sounds in the module until I set up a kit that sounded halfway decent.... some people did not like the drum sound, but I thought it was the best i did so far.... and I'm not 100% happy with it, but I saved the settings... I'm playing with some new sounds right now that sound o.k. I'm suprised you werent made sick by the mellow vocals.....I was really confused (as usual) about what sounded passable... There was no new gear on this tune, except that I borrowed a nylon string guitar from a friend.... I really appreciate the comments... I will bump your 'too much' thread when I finally hook up with my buddy. I have spoken to him several times about it already, and he has the vocals down for 'Tyrant'.... the guy does a lot of drugs sometimes, so he's a little flaky when it comes down to setting an actual time and day.... he does want to do it though, and i want to hear it. As soon as it's happening, I'll bump your thread. Unless you have a new song up......So get a new tune up so I can be reminded once again, that my stuff does not sound as good!!

muzeman - thanks man. The mic was an 'EV'...a cheap one i think...I bought it off a friend for 20 bucks. I think I rrrrrrrrreally need a new one. I also sang through a Digitech Vocal 300, and ran that through a Blue Max compressor and then through a BBE. I appreciate the comments dude




mixmkr - funny stuff as usual! Appreciate the comments, but you know that.........I have an idea.....from now on, you can sum up your comments to, *vocals - good or bad, mix - good or bad*. That will save you the trouble of having to repeat your advice over and over just because it can't penetrate my thick skull... BTW, Cranky One liked the drums!!

I'm a little unclear as to how I send this stuff back to you. The only way I know how is to put it on nowhereradio (I'm a 'puter idiot). Is that what you want me to do? I guess I could put a sax line there until you got it and then delete it. Are there other ways to send you an Mp3? Someone help me out on this 'cause I really don't know much about sending files.

As for the 'experimental saxophone tune,' I would say play in any key that you happen to be feeling the most at the time... I will write something around it... If you put a few different ones, maybe experiment with different tempos..... if the sax doesnt have to be 'recorded' in stereo, than the click on one side would be cool... Let me know when you put it on nowhere and I'll down load it right away.... I think this will be interesting... I never get to colaborate, so it should be fun... when you add the sax to this tune, I'm curious to see if you can make it blend with the rhythm... very interesting indeed.....

Very Interesting... (this style of music is not on my normal listening plate.)

I like the changes throughout the song. I lost the vocals when the song got heavy, (I feel they were a little to effect laden)but, it sounds like the vocals were done like that on purpose. The vocals in the beginning were awesome, though. I really was diggin them. The low end was pretty heavy, I think probably a little heavier than I prefer, but I could still here the song.

I actually liked the song. Good job.
Now, I will go and read the comments everyone else wrote!

Thanks for thanking me . I really should make more own stuff. I have some unfinished stuff on my computer, but I can't decide what to do with them. Maybe I will do something with them.

At the moment, I'm working on a few Megadeth covers to put on a tribute compilation. It's an internet tribute thing. The songs are almost finished. I don't have any vocals, but I have this one guy who's willing to try out them. Hell, maybe I'll try singing it myself. I have really really really crappy microphone (it came with the soundcard), that I might use. I just gotta wait until nobody else is in the house . I just get too embarassed otherwise. My brother is in the room constantly, since it's his room, and he's playing Wolfenstein every day. Next week my he goes to work, so I can have the room to myself for a while. I wish I could sing, though.

Hey, I wish I could sing too! I think you should definitely try it! I can tell by the sound of your tunes that you wouldn't keep it if it sucked, so go for it! If I have the balls to do it, I think most anyone can... By *my* definition of a singer, I am not one. Thanks to the ability to record and punch in and out a million times, it's fun to take a stab at it anyway... In the end, nobody cares..
