We have debated this with our fans quite a lot and cannot figure out which it sounds like.

Note: This recording isn't perfectly synced yet and it is just a demo recording.

This song is called Repentance.

well...

i think you convinced me that direct recording the guitars is NOT the way to go...

on a more serious note...

at times it kiiinda sounds like one of them, but not really.

my suggestions:

-loose the DI sound of the guitars, record an amp.
-LOOSE the flange effect on the voice. why do people even try this??
-im not sure whats up with the bass, but it has very little low end...which for a bass is not a good thing.
-pan the guitars, make the mix BIG and RAW.

in short it sound like you ran the WHOLE mix through some sort of flange effect, which killed it.

Ummm....That is a miced Trace Elliot amp miced with an sm58 and thats what I did was panned the guitar hard left and hard right and offset the right channel by 20ms to make a bit of a chorus sound to it. As far as the flange on the voice, I just can't figure out how to achieve the effect I am looking for without it, but I want it to almost sound robotic.

I really was not looking for comments on the mix, but rather comments on the genre/style of the song. I know how it sounds and it is like that for a reason.

So as for the sound of the song as whole, who does it sound like?

PLEASE DON'T COMMENT ON THE MIX. IT IS CALLED TESTMIX FOR A REASON. Maybe I should have been more clear in specifying that.

"what I did was panned the guitar hard left and hard right and offset the right channel by 20ms to make a bit of a chorus sound to it."

ahh...thats why. if its just 1 guitar track doubled over its hard to get any big raw type sound.

as far as the song goes....its SIMILAR...but not too similar. there is one part that sounds pretty toolish...but overall, not much.

BEEZO, THats a PHAT song

I really enjoyed it. I have not heard the words yet though. I just liked the playing and the melody. I think the vocal was too low overall and had a little too much highs overall

Nice song man

Funk on!

Yes, it reminds me of some SOAD

Yup

Good song, don't worry 'bout who you sound like. (Just to be a hypocrite now, I heard shades of Sabbath and COC in the guitars.)

The guitar riff was righteous but the PHlanging was a little too much, there and on the vox.

The production was rough, but sounds like a band that would kick ass live.

Thanks you guys. Yeah...we have a very good live show. Two of us are long haired headbangers and the singer gets into it like Bono crossed with Serge. The bass player keeps rockin the whole time too.

Thanks a whole lot you guys. Just to plug my band, you can see more of our band's stuff at:

www.elohsa.com/demo.htm

There you can find live recordings of our stuff, and some covers like Sugar by System Of A Down, and 3 Libra's by A Perfect Circle. I really like our version of 3 Libra's. Its my favorite recording.

Can't get that link to work!! Edit it and I'll try again

crap...
i listened to your version of 3 libras. you all did pretty damn good. the singing was quite top notch as well.

my 2 favorite bands are APC and Tool, so I did somthing similar to you guys...kind of.
The first part is me playing my guitar and singing a small part of 3 libras. I cant sing well while playing at the same time so the vocals suffered.
the 2nd part is kind of odd. I took "Judith" and EQ'd maynard totally out. I then recorded myself singing over the music trying as best as i could to sound like maynard. then I put each clip of myself singing and followed it by the original version with maynard. so its me, then him, then me, etc...

Ok so have you noticed how Maynard's vocals sound. That's what made me try the flanging effect on the voice. I'd like to get that sound somewhat. It almost sounds like when you try Antares Autotune on a voice like 2 times in a row. Our lead singer is a huge Maynard fan and can do Tool songs to the T. Anyway, thanks for listening. I haven't gotten to your tunes yet, but I'll let you know what I think when I get to them.

let me know what you think of mine when you listen. I too am a huuge maynard fan.. :D

I think I see what you mean about that effect... Were you going for somthing similar to the vocals at the very begining of stinkfist and eulogy? If so...try this: EQ everything totally out from 0 - 110 Hz. and everything from 3,500 and above. It will give you a similar effect....maybe. :)

ok...ive been able to deduce that you're AROUND 25...

anyway, if I remember correctly youre main qualm about the judith one was that i couldn't "feel" 6/8 time. I can and did just fine but for some reason the vocals were shifted in relation to the music quite a bit.
On the part that goes "f**k you're god" there are 3 distinct drum hits that fall right on the words, but when my vocals were shifted forward it was more like f**k (drum hit) your (drum hit) god (drum hit). So, yes, the whole thing is out of time. But I think at least the vocal tone and melody are good. Thats all i was really even trying to accomplish.

sorry about the finger. :D have a strange day.

1. 22
2. I couldn't say for sure, but I do have a solid appreciation for APC so that's not the issue.

My "main qualm" is that it sounds like crap overall, both your "cover" and the karaoke. Point being, these are good songs and they deserve better. I'm convinced you can do better and I want to hear it. Seriously, your vocals are way out of tune...guitar is off, etc. It just doesn't do justice to the song. I'm not going to address the karaoke...thats not what I do. I'm sure there can be timing issues there but what's really the point, even it was spot on? You're just singing over APC... ;)

Maybe in Japan you'll be the next big thing. I hear they love their karaoke! :D

sorry about the finger. :D have a strange day.

No problem...and thanks!

sure it is karaoke. Im not denying that. whats the problem with it??

and people wonder why i use so many "warnings" before I post something...

one of my "warnings" was that the 3 libras one IS out of tune. I recorded it with the guitar at the same time as my voice and did it at 3am in my dorm room .I was quiet so I wouldnt wake anyone. The quieter you sing the harder it is to keep in tune. Plus, I just have a very hard time singing and playing at the same time. If I could have broken them up both the vocals and guitar would have turned out better. Dont think that I can't hear the problems. The guitar is way out of time and the vocals are out of tune....and time. I just did this for fun, not as an official "3 Libras Cover".

I find it odd though that everyone on this board singles me out... I mean, on Beezoboy's first mp3 he posted the singing was out of tune quite a bit, yet noone said a word. Listen where he sings "cause everything's fucked up!"
Its pretty bad... Im not being harsh on him, but if you're going to tear everything i do apart at least be consistent(sp?:)) and do the same to others. thats all...

Well do a better job of it! :) That's all I'm saying...and I probably wouldn't care if you'd butchered something I didn't particularly like, I just think you need to do justice to the music before posting it here and there. ;)

The problem with karaoke is that there's not much to it, you're using the original music, etc. I'm sure you can see that. Anyone can Sing Along with Mitch.

Oh please...in no way am I singling you out. I'm sure if you or whoever had "covered" most anything else and posted it in the middle of a thread I wouldn't have even bothered to listen to it much less comment, but a post a cover of something I can appreciate and you'll hear from me. I did listen to Beezoboy's song and didn't feel compelled to post anything about it, but I assure you if I had I would have been similarly objective. Of course, its also not a cover of a good song from talented band I happen to appreciate.

Anyway, I didn't really want to stir shit up here...I really just hoped to encourage you to give it another shot. I guess my methods are a little strange. ;) Maybe that's what happens when you end staying awake most of the night. I dunno...

Ok thats it 15 minutes of timeout for the both of you. Webcyan, I listened to your stuff, and well I have to say that it need a little bit of work too. FYI, I am not singing on any of these tracks, I am the drummer. So any comments made about singing I will not take offense to.

Webcyan, you also don't take criticism very well I think. I mean I didn't give you the finger when you told me not to direct record the guitars. I mean thats what this site is about. But, on the other hand it is not about taking shots on people either. If you knew that song wasn't an amazing take, did you not expect that people might harp on it.

Anyway I thank you all for listening to my song. I hope no one got too flustered in this thread. I guess this goes to show you can attack a mans woman, but don't attack his musicianship or mock his favorite band.
