I'm yet another happy SM-81 owner... VERY clean, detailed and consistant. Try out your choice of mics at the store (or rent them and try them in your own studio) before you buy.
 
To me, the hardest thing about buying a mic is knowing if it will work for my situation in my room. Really, nobody can tell me exactly the answer to that very specific equation. What I try to do is only buy mics from a place that has a decent return policy so that I can test it to see if it works for me. Unfortunately, not all places will do this with microphones.
