Does Sonar 5 use more CPU?

Just got Sonar 5 in the mail yesterday. It took Cakewalk a month to get it to me!

I haven't really had much opportunity to play with it, but my initial impression on opening a few older projects is that CPU use is higher when I play a project in Sonar 5. I opened a Sonar 2 project and saw the CPU meter edging towards 80%--I don't think it ever goes above 50% for the same project in Sonar 2.

Anyone else notice this? Why does it happen?

Alot of reports seem to be that the CPU meter does not read accurately in Sonar 5. Try looking at your task manager to see what the CPU usage really is. I think Sonar 5 just acts funny on certain systems or with certain configurations. I haven't noticed any difference myself, or at least very little. I also haven't had all the problems with bugs that so many seem to be having.
I don't know what that is all about.

So far, I haven't seen my cpu meter go above 11%. Most of the time it reads 0, so I guess it's off, just the opposite way. It will read 0 even when you know it's grinding away. But, so far no real glitches either.

Interestingly, I tried comparing the Sonar 5 cpu meter with the Windows task manager on the aforementioned project.

On the windows task manager, the usage was actually about 10% higher! Gasp, I thought to myself.

Then, I did the same test on Sonar 2. The task manager cpu meter hit 100% and stayed there! The project plays normally however.

I now don't believe either one of these cpu meters. Maybe there is a better one out there. Maybe I just shouldn't look!

I just did a 4 song demo this weekend for a local group and noticed the CPU meter running about 10-15% with around 15 audio tracks. Occasionally I saw it jump up to around 50-60% and then right back down.

Is this the issue others are reporting?

I've been wondering the same thing - I was running Cubase LE, and doing just fine, then switched over to Sonar 5, and all of a sudden, my latency time has to be pushed WAY up to keep the glitches out. Granted, I'm not running DirectX 9.0, but good gravy! Anyway, I'm gonna blow out my computer and start over - got a few too many crap programs on there for my liking. But I'd be curious to hear others' thoughts.

It really depends. At first I believed it did ... and I had significant trouble with the program going from Sonar 4 to 5. I was unhappy with the performance, but began to look at other components of my rig ...

I run a dual Athlon system ... and AMD just put out a significant enhancement to their processors ... YET to fully utilize the enhancement, I needed to upgrade the bios of my mobo.

Upgrading the mobo bios cause Windows to seize because the bios (for some unknown reason) reconfigured the hardware address access on the mobo.

So I had to reinstall Windows to get it to work right.

Which means I reinstalled everything. No big deal really, as I'm pretty well prepared for it.

ONCE I got everything back in, I actually believe that S5 has been more stable and uses roughly about the same CPU as S4.

But it SOUNDS BETTER.

...and THAT'S what it all is really about.

Best,

Kev.

dual processor enhancements eh?

hmmm, I run an amd a64 4400 x2, and usually stay pretty up-to-date on things such as bios/processor enhancements and whatnot.
Would you post a link to the updates you referred to? I would appreciate it, as I
would like to install this on my machine.
Thanks!

Aaron
