Does direct pre bypass mixer preamps?

Hey all
Got a Soundcraft M8...
Does hitting the direct/pre button BYPASS the pre, or are you still using the boards preamp?
Thanks!
:)

It would be direct OR preamp.

Direct would assume you're using an external preamp or at least something at line level.

I have an M8- hitting direct pre takes signal AFTER the preamp BEFORE it goes through the eq and fader. This can be somewhat useful if you want to dial in the gain for the recording and still be able to adjust the volume for monitoring the input signal. If you dont want to use the preamp in the M8 i wouldnt even plug into it (although the line input may bypass the pre- i dunno)
Hope that helps :)

Actually, the direct outs on the M-Series boards with the direct-pre engaged is post EQ.

Really? I dont use it often. I'll have to check that again. :p

Yeah, if you have the manual take a look at the circuit diagram. It's basically only cutting out the fader. Also note that if you'r using Aux Sends on those (the ones that are prefader) they'll get mixed in there as well. I found that out the hard way. If you want to bypass everything but the preamp you need to use the insert jacks.
