my hi hats are already almost too loud without them being miced lol

as for the ride--no...

i used to just do the four mic setup but now ive got more inputs and more mics so im doing the toms as well.

Sometimes I mic the HH with a Shure SM81.

If a song has some hh timekeeping "chck-chck-chck" thing going on I might consider it... but wouldn't a little compression bring it out as well?

In my home set-up I usually get enough hat and ride in the overheads. But I remember that at one of the sessions I did at Inner Ear, the engineer put a home-modified PZM on my hat. I don't remember if he gave it its own track or mixed it in with the overheads, but it sounded sweet.

Is your ride light or heavy? Maybe you need a different ride, LOL!

no its pretty loud on the over heads ....i was just seeing what everyone eles does

I always mic the hat and ride. Sometimes I don't use it, but it is always there if I need the clarity.

i always mic the hi hat. The ride however always depends on first, the way drummer has his whole kit set up (mostly the cymbals) and second the style of music and/or drummer. Just because it is mic'ed and tracked does not mean that the channel makes it into the mix. I prefer to overmic and mute things later so that I always have plenty of options.

Everytime i hear local bands play i find that it is always the kit that has been miked badly! i play drums for a MOD band and although the kick and snare are blasting out, the toms and the cymbals tend to get lost.

I use Paiste 2002 cymbals and even though they are loud they can still get drowned out. I love to hear the Hi Hats coming though and always try to get our sound engineer to put a mic on them! (this request usually falls on deaf ears!!!! :D )

i always mic the hi hats when i record as i like them to be clear. In the past i have used an Opus 58 for this. Has anyone else used these as i never see anyone else using them???
