Driver.cab?

when i re-installed windows it said that it could not install driver.cab.... what is it

Remember the old windows commercial "Where do you want to go today?"

Driver.cab is the program that gets you where you're going....

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

I *think* that the CAB format is an archive used for installing stuff, so the Driver.cab is a collection of drivers that you could install later- like extra printer drivers, etc. My guess is that your computer will run but it may be a headache when you need to install/reinstall drivers for something. Just my guess. I'd be nervous and test everything that you need the computer to do. Check your installation CD for scratches and such and reinstall if you can.

Take care,
Chris

.cab files are kinda like zip files, they have all the files in them that the setup program needs to install Windows. Driver.cab contains all the device drivers that Microsoft supplies for hardware devices. Most likely your Windows CD is scratched or dirty so the file couldn't be read properly. I'm not sure if you can install windows without it because it includes drivers for EVERYTHING!

put your setup CD in and search it for the file driver.cab. Im not sure where it would need to be on your PC but if you have it on the CD, maybe you can just save it to where it should be. Search your PC for other .cab files and put it in the same one. I searched the microsoft site and found this...

Copying a large Driver.cab file to the local hard disk instead of leaving it on the CD or network has the following advantages:

With the driver set on the local hard disk, users do not need the Setup CD to install new devices, which especially benefits mobile users. Exceptions are products with Windows drivers that are not included on the Setup CD.
Users do not need local administrator rights to install new hardware because all device drivers stored in Driver.cab are on the hard disk and are digitally signed.
For network-based setups, copying the Driver.cab file to the local hard disk reduces bandwidth requirements in these ways:
During setup, less system and network overhead is required to copy the single large Driver.cab file than many small files.
During subsequent hardware installations, driver files already reside on the local hard disk, and do not need to be copied over the network.

so it looks like your PC should operate fine with out it as long as the drivers were able to be installed for current hardware....

when I say everything I mean:

Disk controllers
CPU
video cards
network interfaces
monitors
sound cards
printers

Pretty much everything that you see in device manager. You can open up the .cab file in Winzip and have a look, there are 4657 files in that archive. Did windows install and run? I didn't think it would because it couldn't even install even the most basic drivers (generic VGA compatible video card for example)

windows works but i cannot get online and my vga video multimedia driver will not install..... it askes to gain acsess to the internet.... but like i said i cannot not connect to the internet. in a sticky position
