Candy O by the Cars?? I'm trying to do a remake of that song, (heavier), but I really want that same backround synth sound..

AND if you know what synth that was, do you think I could get that sound out of my Alesis QS6.1 or Roland JV 10-10?

thanks in advance for any suggestions..

thanks for the link Cordura... I'm not sure it answered my questions, but it was interesting... I appreciate it.

I think that you need an oscillator capable of doing a sawtooth waveform. I think that's the sound you hear on the record. Maybe you can add a little phaser or chorus so it's a little more edgy on the tops, maybe a ring modulator will do it too.

Another element is the stacatto feeling. You can achieve that by programming your ADSR envelop properly, making sure it's not in Repeat mode. Another easy way is to sequence the notes and then cut the duration by x%, until you get the groove.

But they I guess is the sawtooth waveform. You can use a hipass filter if it's obstructing too much the beat, or send it back with reverb and panning.

Oh, another nice touch would be to put a filter modulated by the veolcity of the notes (much like an envelope filter). That will give it a non-repeating feeling.

Cheers, Andrés

thanks cordura!

I think I should explain something.. You obviously have serious knowledge about this, but I am a moron... I really have trouble understanding what you are talking about....I don't even know what half of those words mean..

I'm going to try and reword my question so maybe you could break it down to moron terms for me..:D

The sound I'm talking about on 'Candy-O', is that arpeggiated type sound that goes on in the back through most of the song..

I have an Alesis QS6.1 and a Roland JV 10-10.... Is there a way to get a similar sound from either one of those?

I appreciate your responses, I wish I was smart enough to understand them.. :D

thanks man

from what I read in the Synth Museum, the 106 is from 1984 and that track is 1979, so it can't be. But it's a pretty simple sound, it can be done with most synths.

I read the QS6 manual, so here's my guess. It's all in Part 8, Editing Programs (everything you need to know is there).
Page 114: It says that the QS6 has 4 Sounds (which are the oscillators) for each Program. You'll need one, so you can mute the other three.
Now you need to select one sound. I think what you're after is in the Synth Group, or in the Wave Group (page 115). In he latter, you'll find lots of saw waves, but you can also try the Synths: maybe the Seq Basses are also great. How fun is to audition sounds on a synth!
Envelopes in synths are used to describe what happens with a parameter of a sound over time. For example: how does the the volume of this Program evolve over time? Read page 134 and you'll understand it. There are envelopes and modulators for almost everything, so it's a nice machine. I guess it beats the crap out of my 8-bits Ensoniq SQ1!

Great that you remind me of The Cars. I really love the group. I listened to "Just What I Needed" compilation this weekend. I have to say that they sound pretty dated, but I still love them.
It's incredible that I remembered most of Elliot Easton's guitar solos note by note.

Cheers, Andrés

I believe you are correct

Yeah your right buddy. I believe the Juno has the same sound in it. Oh well I tried :)

check this out!

seems like Greg Hawkes reads and participate in alt.music.thecars newsgroup!

The first Cars album was recorded using basically 3 keyboards:
an Arp Omni, a Yamaha CP-30 electric piano, and a Mini-Korg, which
which was my first ever synth, which I still have. (It plays the
melody line in Just What I Needed.) I got a Prophet 5 before the
Candy-O record, and you're right, it was used extensively on Candy-O
and Panarama. (Let's Go, Dangerous Type, etc.) Shake It Up, too,
now that I think of it. Then the Jupiter 8 became my favorite and it
was used alot on Heartbeat City. Greg

Click here to check all his postings in the newsgroup. Maybe you can even ask himself how he did it! Isn't internet cool or what?

You can probably get either the QS6.1 or JV-1010 to give you a cartoon caricature version of that sound, but it's not going to have anything near the warmth and fullness of a Prophet 5.
