No. Nobody who has used one could credibly take that position.

The mic is good for some things and not so hot for others, but it is a classic. I'm quite sure mine will outlive me and I intend to stick around for a long while. They are versatile! An SM57 makes a great first mic because you will always have a use for it, and it will always deliver.

You must be crazy! I can credibly say I dont like it, for a variety of reasons.

1) It sounds boxy
2) The off axis rejection is almost non existent
3) The off axis response is terrible
4) It DOESNT always deliver, and rarely does it actually deliever at all

Now, being that was your only mic, yeah, it works. BUt when you have GOOD mics, meaning anything thats NOT an SM57, yeah, you realize what a worthless piece of crap it is. I dont like it, for good reason. Its not really a great mic, and I dont see any reason why someone should NOT have one. It does make a good talkback mic though.
Dont even think about using it on toms. The rejection, or lack thereof, will kill your drum sound. Same with snare really. I guess its ok on a guitar cab where the is no ambient noise to worry with, but no where near as good a sound as a nice condensor or a Senn 441 or 421. Its an overhyped no very good sounding mic. So you can hammer nails with it? Who cares, I dont hammer nails, I record music.

As was mentioned...the SM57 is a mic that will produce a 'usable' sound under many different situations...it is not a 'golden sound'...it has a certain grit to it that you really cant get anywhere else....it does respond to EQ almost as faithfully as the old family pooch...I think the newer ones sound really boxy whereas the older Unidyne III's are much more 'open'....through a pre such as a GT ViPre they simply murder guitar amps...I have six...I love one...the others are mics in the locker for big stupid drumkits and crappola..lately I've been replacing the 57 on guitar amps with the modified ADK A51's I have...much more real tone and up front...In conclusion, they are mics that seem to effect all who use them in a myriad of ways...and unlike some mics which SUCK no matter what, at least a 57 has some redeeming qualities.

wow! Only that probably 80% of the music you have probably heard (as a guess, of course) had a 57 on the snare, and probably another healthy percent using the 57 for gtr cabinets, I am supprised you haven't had better results. I know you like your Sennheisers, and I too would opt for the 421 most of the time for the toms and speakers cabinets, but snare??

Senn 441 or 421.
they're also a bit more expensive than the sm57's,
guess that's why they're overhyped...
easy to find, easy to buy, easy to use for most people,
and when you're fed up with them, and if you earned some money with recording you can go a step higher and get you a pair of 421's
