I am so curious to find out if anyone plays live with there computer? Laptop or otherwise?

Do you use the same set-up to record in as well?

If not why not?

just curious to know what I maybe in for as I run everything through my preamps/soundcard/computer (laptop) and then out to a PA.

The band is simple keyboard, guitar and bass plus guest drummers, mostly percussionists. So 2 vocal mics 1-2 percussion mics. And line in for bass and guitar (with modeling plugins)

I have asked a lot of questions and you have been very good. I have been attemtping to get a system to translate well for a project studio and then directly to the stage. Do you all think this is possible? Has anyone done it?

I keep leaning one way then another. From spendin a lot more then I wanted to then going down then realizing the whole thing wouldnt work. Then always the future expandability.

The only thing I am sure about is the yorkies for nearfield monitors:)

Any help would be great. I have up to 2000 but its a big time stretch to get that much.

The models I have seriously thought about are:

Protools digi 002 (rack and control surface) I use Nuendo mostly not sure if they interface at all:) but new program might be a good thing.

Motu 896 and 828 MKII These are my best options as I see it right now since they offer good a/d and d/a and have good preamps till I can afford better ones.

I really do need firewire I think (tested a couple of USB and USB2 and latency even though slight was a problem and the Motu were spot on and so was the digi002)

I know long diatribe just seeing if anyone else is wanting or doing something like I want to do? Or suggestions or encouragement as to the selections above:) Or possibly how you would/or did do the live and project studio thing?:)

Wow I am feeling very lonely:( No one has thought about using a computer to run a live show before?

Can anyone let me know why I shouldnt?

you can i've seen some djs do it but its mainly like they have the tracks of vocals and beats on mp3s instead of having the vynl records used with some kind of midi turntable or something like that that they can scratch with...its pretty interesting

I guess I am confused about what your purpose of having a computer at your show would be...

When you say you want the computer to "run" the show, what are you talking about? It doesn't sound like you have a complicated setup (bass, guitar, drums, and vocals don't really need anything from a computer).

Are you talking about recording your show? Midi sequencing/sampling for keyboards? Guitar amp modeling?

No actually running the mixer and sync it to multimedia device like a projector. And mainly to use the plugins and have the VSTi access.

Lots of reasons actually. Not to record live at all. I have a project studio for that. Just wanted to be able to have 1 set up for both.

This keep the outboard gear to a minimum and gives me a maximum amount of control of the live output. Plus I have at my fingertips thousands of effects for bass and guitar and vocals PLUS thousands of keyboard instruments. It seems to me to be the most fleixible arrangement.

And to be able to sync it with a running DVD projected behind us. Seems like I could put on a major show? But dont seem to have anyone as an example?

I've seen a few live shows where bands used computers. The drummer for a band called ester drang uses one. I think he uses it mainly for drum samples and things like that. I've also heard of a guy that does his own solo act with just him, a guitar, and his laptop. I think it's one of the guys from a band called the red hot valentines. I've never actually seen it, but heard a friend talk about it.

Cool thanks:) I guess this is kind of new? well I will try it out and see:)

If you guys have any more comments or equipt suggestion I would love to hear them:)

I got a buddy in Atlanta that does a single act using his laptop , cakewalk Pro-audio 9, a mixer, mackie PA, and a couple of Korg modules. He has all the musical parts sequenced except for the guitar and vocal.
