So i'm having a hard time. I'm currently using an old Tascam US-224 2-track and am finding it difficult to record drums et al with two tracks. I went to the store to look for a new recording thingie and saw all kinds of wonderful expensive digital recorder/mixer/editer/cd burner/hard drives. The problem is that all I need is the digital recorder part. I use Audacity and Garage Band so the only knobs or buttons i use on the tascam are the two inputs, the trim knob, headphone output, line output, and USB output thing. Thats all I need. But I need at least 6 (preferably 8) tracks to record at once. Is there such a machine. I'm somewhat distraught, actually at not being able to find one because I already have the software and everything on my computer. I just need to record more tracks!
thanks in advace.

What's your budget? Would you want to record onto the computer?

wow. thanks for the fast reply.

I would want to record onto the computer, yes.

Budget is as cheap as possible up to around $500 CDN.

Well the Presonus Firepod is meant to have good pre amps and allows for 8 separate jack or xlr inputs. It's a little over your budget, but you might find one on ebay for cheap. I'll have a quick look. There are some, but they still have at least a day to go, so who knows what the price will end up.

You could also go with a Behringer ADA8000 here for $215 USD, and this for $150. Total $365 USD. Although the preamps wont be as good, but still extremely workable. With the PCI card, it gives you the option of adding another ADAT interface at a later date, if you wish.

That Montana card won't work on it's own, it's an expansion add on for the Dakota card which costs about 400 bucks.

The Dakota card has 2 ADAT lightpipe I/O, it can be used with 2 of those Behringer ADA-8000's for a total of 16 inputs and 16 outputs, but that puts you in the 800+ dollar range.

Do you know of any ADAT PCI cards within the budget?

I'm quite interrested in the Behringer one but I don't know what an ADAT output is or how to connect it to a computer (Apple iBook G4). The Firepod's pretty attractive too but, yeh, it's a bit more than I was hoping to spend.

Why not get an interface for the computer, like a delta 1010? I picked one up used for less than $250 US. Then you can track 8 at once and also have unlimited tracks on the PC.

I would say that the Firepod is probably the most bang for the buck in this case because it has 8 mic preamps built in, the M-Audio Delta 1010 would be a good choice for a couple of hundred dollars less, but it doesn't have any mic preamps, so you'll need to spend more money on an outboard mixer with direct outs for it's preamps, or seperate preamps to get it all working.

Thanks a lot guys. I'll consider saving a little more for the PreSonus.
