Do you use amp modeling instead of amp?

They can, and do. The good ones do anyway. A 99 dollar POD from GC aint gonna cut it. Something good though, like Guitar Rig or Peavey Revalver will fool even the snobbiest tone purist.

Amplitube is pretty good, too. I definitely think they don't respond quite the same way that a real tube amp does, but they're still pretty good. My SansAmp Bass Driver, for instance, seems to respond to dynamics, but the "overdrive" tone seems to mostly be either all on or all off. Real amps have varying degrees of distortion, but the SansAmp doesn't really... The other problem with software emulations is that they aren't as inspiring, though that is likely just because I play my real amp through a 15" speaker and I play Amplitube through 5" studio monitors... Also my monitors are really poorly positioned in my room, resulting in way too much bass coming from my guitar tone.

Guitar Rig 4 responds to picking nuances just like a real tube amp does.

When I'm songwriting I always go for Amp Models. Note that I said songwriting and not recording.
This is just the phase I complete the entire track with vocals, guitars and drum samples and my synthesizer stuff to send around to the band to practice with.

And to be honest, we're an electronic rock band and on some tracks it sounds craaazy.

However, I feel kinda professional and cool when I record using mics and amps :)
