Do you run antivirus in the background?

Does antivirus take up many resources? I've got Norton 2003 because I just finished formatting both my drives after the "hellraiser" virus lived up to its namesake on my machine last week.

I was just wondering if anyone turns off antivirus while they are recording, etc.

Cubase yes. Acid & Sound Forge, no. I'd turn it off for Acid & Sound Forge too if they started having problems.

As long as you're disconnected from the net and not loading new files from floppy or cd/dvd, you should be fine without Norton running. You just want it on (and updated!!!) whenever you're touching new files.

Anything running in background steals resources...it is recommended to turn off all background services when recording.

i use one computer exclusively for music production, it NEVER goes on the internet and the only software on it is for music (and stuff like winzip ...)

i ones had norton systemworks on my computer - it TOTALLY fucked up my system and couldn't be uninstalled - some components just kept running in the background after uninstalling it.

No, not on my music machine. I once had one running, though. I don't remember which brand it was, but it didn't give me any problems. But you never know, so I uninstalled it.

All new data that comes near this machine has been checked on a second computer running av software.

AVG anti-virus (not a resource eater at all) i let run in the backround. Norton, I would for sure close that sucka. ESPECIALLY something like Norton Internet Security - that EATS resourceses.

Close whatever you can though. You wont get a virus during your recording unless you get on teh internet simultaneously...so probably shouldn't worry. just close it. ha.

I don't run a virus scanner at all on my DAW, but I do on my other systems (including my mail server, intrusion detection system, and firewall).

Of course, I'm exceptionally paranoid about making sure I don't behave in ways that can propagate viruses anyway. I have never, in my entire career, had a virus on any of my home machines.

Unless the music itself is VIRAL in nature!

Believe me, I know some bands that COULD fall into this category... (i.e. take up unwanted time and disk space, annoy the HELL out of you until they're gone...)

I won't let an Anti Virus program be installed on any of my computers ever. IMO they cause more problems then they solve. If you don't want viruses don't open suspect email attachments or run cracked software. I've never had a major virus or anything that something like Adaware couldn't take care of.

Well, abstinence is also the best form of birth control. However... :D ;)
