Fancy Rock N' Roll
Lennon --> Mc Cartney.

Jagger --> Richard.

Plant --> Page.

Tyler --> Perry.

Rose --> Stradlin.

Hetfield --> Ulrich.

Elton John --> Taupin.

Bush --> Bin Laden.

etc...

Well sometime I think I'm gonna need some partner to do write a good song. How about you guys ? gals ?

I always seem to get stuck. I'll have a great chord structure and melody for a chorus but I can't get the verse or a great verse and chorus lyric but no melody or chord structure. Yeesh!

This is my only point of ego.

I can't write music with anyone.
I'm way too protective of my lyrics. I'll play other people's
songs but i won't let anyone change around mine. I don't
even like suggesting lyrics.

so my answer is, hell no. You don't need nobody!

Ive kicked around the idea of writing with a partner.....

I did it in high school before i knew squat about songwriting, and have written by myself since.......

if you ever wanna collaborate, let me know...ill fly with ya.....

I feel about the same way that StonePiano feels.

Although I don't know why.
I know my material isn't something the world is going to clamor over to listen to.
I'm not even thinking about selling any of it. I do it so my kids and grandkids can hear what that ol' stranger on the other side of the country did when he was alive.

I have thought about it though, I'll admit that much.
In fact I do believe it I did have a partner I'd be working on our material much more than I do my own. See, as it is I have no one to answer to, depend on me or expect anything from me.

Maybe I do need kick in the butt.
Maybe I do need a partner.

I'll have to give it some thought. More than I ever have given the idea so far.

One thing that holds me back is my physical health.
I'm really limited as to what I can do on a guitar anymore.
My right shoulder that's connected to my picking hand has been broken, shot, dislocated and torn more than a few times.
Now it aches constantly, sometimes for a week or more. My reflexes in my hand has slowed and it is numb alot, like its asleep.
I'd hate to get involved with another person for this reason.
I don't think it would be fair to them.

Oh well. Just dreaming.

Ok, I'm back to normal.
What were we discussing?

On those rare occasions where I have a musician friend that wants to co-write, I keep a mindset of collaboration.. it's a real easy going attitude where I acknowledge that anything that flows out of the session is fair game and part of the collaborative work.

But if it's just me, I am extremely protective of my work. Rarely do I want any input of the writing outside of my own. Of all my musical talents (or lack thereof), it's the one area that I feel I excel at.. to the point that I'm afraid I'll hear someone else steal the stuff I create if it gets out before the copyright forms are sent. Seriously, I have no ego except when it comes to a song I finished. And if everyone thought the song was garbage it wouldn't bother me in the slightest. I would just think they didn't "get it" in the first place.

I've had some pretty cool stuff come out of collaborations. But I found it works best when you really like hanging out with the other person and dig where they are coming from.

Hmmm. I can see where that would have an advantage. Just in the course of shooting the bull with someone ideas can pop in, or talking about their feelings on some subject may spark something. A team effort sort of thing.
I think you brought up a good point., Cyrokk.

All of my finished tunes are collaborations....

although I have only met one of my co-writers face to face....

I think tunes turn out better when you have some one else's input on the creative aspect....whether it be lyrically or musically...

c-ya,
Joe

Hi Joro.

That's interesting. I didn't know that you collaborated.
I never thought of it that way either. The creative input, that is.
Can you share with us some of your experiences with these other people?
Some of the problems if any that has arose from it.
How did do you make it work long distance?
Email, snail?

Give us an interview.
Please? I think that would be interesting to read about.
It may spark someone to try it.
You don't have to name names.

I mean, like you don't 'have' to. Some of the weaker guys/gals will get over it in time. You needn't feel guilty about not sharing with us. ;)

Hi BG............

Sure.......

Once upon a time...............
In a galaxy far far away.............

oops....wrong story....sorry :D

OK...I started working online with musicians and writers at Tonos.
Tonos is a web site run by Carole Bayer Sager, David Forester and BabyFace Edmonds...
Initially it was designed by Carole as an on-line collaboratorium (is that a word? :D ).....I had never written anything....a real rookie.....I still am actually....started about a year and a half ago...
The site has changed drastically ever since they started charging members.....it is still a great place for networking though....

Through the message boards there...I networked...I established friendships with quite a few talented people....I was mused and had a few folks that were, and still are my mentors....sort of like school....
I thought I was a musician....turns out I am better at scribing lyrics...but I still wanna write and play the music...ya know?

I became fast friends with some extremely talented people....
As far as problems......no...no problems yet....
We exchange files via e-mail....we all have DSL or Broadband with large capacity (10-20 meg) e-mail servers.....

I have even collaborated here too....David K plays fiddle on one of my best songs....he is a phenomenal fiddle player...pretty cool guy too...

The people I talk of are not just "other musicians and writers" though.....they are indeed my friends.....we talk of life...kids, family, loses, triumphs, disappointments....it's not just about the music.....ya know?

So....BG......wanna write a tune together?

Let me know man.....OK?
Joe

I have and do work with co-writers, usually composers, because my output of lyrics greatly exceeds my music writing. In 25+ years I have had a few great co-writing situations and more than a few train wrecks. While I'm fairly protective of my lyrics, I've learned that sometimes you have to swallow your pride and adapt if you ever want your work to see the light of day and be heard by anyone besides your dog and family.

If my composing skills were better, I would prefer not to co-write, but since they haven't improved significantly in a quarter of a century, I will continue to co-write when necessary or when the right collaborator appears.

I'm with you Stonepiano... just most of the time. It's like taking a trip. sometime I would take a lonely trip by myself with my own vehicle, goin' to my destination without anybody telling me where to go... or sometime I would be on the tour bus sharing my journey with tour mate. Both have their own pleasure and pain. While I'm working with my band, I do most of my work shared with other mate to achieve a "win-win" solution. But I've always made a back up in case they don't finish the work. Here I'll take the part. Writing with partner is giving me more sight to see the other side of the song. Mixture a black and white sometimes put everything on track. This happens only when you have a right partner. I mean a RIGHT partner. Chosing a rigth partner indeed takes time, experience together, and kind a like chosing a right wife. But I preffer work alone for my essential project. However I need my "Private room" to do my solo project. As I said SOLO, that must means everything's done by myself. Making melody, lyric, song structure, play ALL instruments, sing, record, mix, and even designing the cover. Finish that, I'll have my time doing my band's material with my partner again. Do a different things together. ;)

I PMed you Joe.

After reading all that you guys have said about partners, I'm going to give it a try and do something with Joro.

This is a most productive thread, James. For me anyway. I hope others find a partner and things work out for them.

i'm certainly up for working with a partner-anything to help get inspiration going. i have a jamming partner that i work with regularly-we usually write lyrics alone, but we've done tons of music together. music that should have been recorded to remember later, when we sobered up.

i only play my own stuff right now, but when that spark happens, you can bet yer sweet bippy i'll be happy to do what i can with it.
