I've always thought my 414's sounded a little harsh or brittle (the new ones, 414 BXL II), especially after getting my tlm 103 (or comparing them to my sm81's as drum OH's). and though running them through my neve or api clones or Sytek with the burr browns seem to help somewhat, i'm still wondering about this mod option that i've heard about.....
audioupgrades.com

anyone have experience with these mods? any other thoughts?

i dont know what that particular upgrade involves but you can bet it's nice... audio upgrades is owned/operated by a guy named jim williams.... ubergeek extrordenare'....

I don't think Jim modifies the XLS versions.

I seem to recall a post somewhere that he doesn't work on the newer surface mount stuff (the reason he mods the 460's but not the 480's).

Still, worth a call to him to ask I suppose. I've owned modified 460's in the past and the work he does is excellent.

If you don't like them.... sell 'em and get something else.

yeah, that sounds like that might be the way to go....

since i've got another pair of LDC's i'm thinking i might sell off the 414's in favor of a nice tube or ribbon mic....

One thing is modding a 50$ MXL, and another is modding a 900$ AKG.
If you don't like your 900$ AKG, then probably it isn't the right mike for you.

yeah, after mulling it over and learning that these newer models have all surface mount stuff i'm probably not going to bother.....

like i said, my mic cabinet could probably benifit more from a different flavor than a second pair of ldc's.

thanks for the input everyone.

wow, i just noticed i've got rep power....

so begins my plan for world domination.....(evil laugh) mah ha ha ha.
