do light dimmers always cause electrical hum?

Get a wireless transmitter system. Hum and noise gone. No direct connection between guitar and amp/power/circuitry.

Then you can track your guitars, SITTING ON THE ROOF! MOOOAAAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!

Along with a good portion of your tone.......

no shit plus the other types of interference it'd bring into the equation.
Plus ....... a wireless might be MORE inclined to pick up emf from a dimmer and it wouldn't do anything at all to help the other pieces of gear that can pick up hum.

Someone answer my question dammit!
:D

Would it do any good to shield the dimmer like you would shield a guitar ? With a farraday cage (metal box) grounded out?

I fucking hate wireless!

I know huh? Like Jim stated they suck the tone right out of your sound and like your comment ..... you'll pick up every police cruiser that goes pass.

I guess if you did install a Faraday cage around the dimmer you would get results. but I'm just guessing here.

cue the defenders of the wireless.
How long will it be before someone is offended that we don't like wireless and tells us how theirs doesn't do any of that?

:D

When I first got a wireless system I thought it was cool for about two gigs then I stepped back and listened closely to what I was trying to do to compensate for the bad tone ..... just not worth it!!!

And I also realized that 95% of all stages that I was performing on that my 20' guitar cord was simple long enough .... besides it's crazy when you see a guitarist leave the stage and run through the audience cause he has a wireless.

Ladies and gentlemen, may I be so bold as to give you an experiment to try.

Go to the local music store. Grab an amp, a guitar, a decent cable, and then the X2 digital wireless system. Preferably the XDS-PLUS because its dual diversity. Guitarists, find an EBMM John Petrucci signature 7, and a Mesa Mark V and 412 traditional cab loaded with C90's. Bassists, try a Tobias Growler 5 or Killer B5 and an Eden WT550B into two D212XLT's. Hell yeah, that's a biased recommendation. Too bad, suckas.

Play your setup with a cable, and then swap to the X2.

I did this with a 5 string bass, to hear the low end. I heard nothing different. At all. Went home, tried the same thing with all my gear AND included my old Nady regular wireless. I dialed up my bass knob on the amp to compensate for the tone sucking. With the X2, I ran my amp FLAT. Everything at 12 o'clock. Clean. This proved that standard radio frequency wireless systems are GARBAGE compared to my X2 digital system.

In my band's practice room, I've been getting tons of 60-cycle if I lift my fingers off the strings. It was especially worse when I pointed the pickups at the halogen track lights. Swapped to the wireless, all noise gone. My X2 system is a glorious revelation of freedom AND great audio quality. And it has never glitched on me during a gig. Had it for well over 2-1/2 years how, dozens of shows and practices, never one problem.

Digital wireless is my friend.

And it can be your friend too.

yeah ..... that's not a recording room or situation ...... the dimmer problem will not be fixed by having a wireless on your bass. That might fix one source of noise but it won't fix the preamps ...... mixing board .... amplifiers that'll pick up the buzz without even having anything plugged into them etc.etc.

But I'm glad you have something you like.

At least it seems so ..... maybe the last person out forgot to shut off the lights!!!!

We're still here. Detroit just forgot to pay the electrical bills, and spent the money instead on Cadillacs and Navigators to escort the mayor's wife around town with a detailed police bodyguard team and chauffeur. That's why you can't see us, the lights are so dim around here.
