Do I suck?

I sit on you.
I'm really only looking for opinions on my singing here.

HERE'S THE LINK

I recorded all this with a very simple setup.
I managed to write the song and compose the music as well as record and mix it all in under 3 hours. Pretty rushed, considering I've spent hours upon hours on simple guitar riffs.

I decided to record like this to get a more "honest" example. I did, however, fiddle with the mixing, and did a bit of dubbing in some background things. LOL
I can't help it!

So, this isn't a display of my recording abilities or guitar OR songwriting abilities. I just want to know if I suck at singing. Of course, I know I don't actually SUCK, but want to know what you experienced ears think. It will really mean a lot to me to get some honest opinions.

If a higher-quality, blood-sweat-tears recording would be better....let me know, I'll start crying!:D

Yup, you suck. ;)
No it's not that bad, but get you teeth apart and also work hard on your intonation and your vocal technique it would be way better. But for starters its ok!!

You need to learn how to project because you are under utilizing your voice. You sing mostly inside your head.

Learn how to breath. Go to the track twice a week and start doing wind sprints to increase your air volume. Start with sprinting 100 yds a couple times a week and then increase it every couple weeks, e.g. 200, 300, 400, 600. Once you get yourself up to sprinting 880's(about 3 months), take all that effort and work you've done and turn it into how you feel in your song. Put so ummph into it.

Learn how to start sounds in different parts of your airway, your chest, your throat, your nose and everywhere in between. Open your mouth and sing to the people on the other side of the room. That one always gets me in church because nobody does it there. They all want to sing into a microphone and if you use the voice God gave you, you don't need a mic there.

Sing scales like la la la la la la la la la, me me me me me me me, you you you you you you you you meme:D

All this for only 3 easy payments of $19.95 made out to my initials, C.A.S.H.

I didn't listen to the clip...But, judging by the title of the thread, I'm guessing it's "Emo" music.

Yeah I aint really feeling it. Is that your natural vocal style? It's pitchy and thin sounding. Not that you have to be Celine Dion pitch-perfect at all times, but there are parts that sound strained and forced. But I really do suck, so take it for what it's worth.

Not bad. The melodies were good for that type of song. You are very, very pitchy though. You do indeed sing inside your head to hit those higher notes when you go into the chorus. I'm battling with that same thing, but I've got a vocal coach and I'm learning alot.

I think NYMorningstar gave the best advice I've heard. Have you considered a vocal coach?

I really appreciate the comments and tips guys, it means a lot!

That's the only bad thing about my recording situation. 90% of the time I can't be very loud. I've watched, listened, and explored the art of projection. I'm not great, but I'm really working on getting the high-end under control. I can get a little thin when holding a high note at "full throttle".

I can still get pretty loud though.

To top off my excuses, I'd also just written it all. As with anyone, with any piece, the better you know it, the more confident and comfortable you are.
The less I have to think about when to say what will give me more room to focus on my voice.

I've been contemplating lessons, and have looking into different programs and instructors. Needless to say, I've yet to find anything worthwhile.:(

It definitely sucks that you can't belt it out due to where you are recording. Sounds like you have an idea of pitch and how to sing. Just keep on practicing when you are alone. Sing to yourself and such. It really helps.

Thanks.
I practice alone whenever I can (which is often).
I've also become accostumed to singing infront of people.
Haha, I can get really loud at work! Everyone thinks I'm a great singer, which means shit to me since the majority of them wouldn't know talent if it bit them in the ass. Anyhow, I think that's good for me. Hell, 2 years ago and I wouldn't sing infront of anyone I didn't know fairly well. Now I don't care, I'm comfortable.

I liked it. I have no advice really. I really thought it was good.

I think it sounds pretty good. There are a couple of pitchy parts, but this is a rough demo right? I can see this backed with a big distorted guitar and drums, and it would sound just fine. Its partly the semi-spare acoustic backing which highlights the weakness of the vocals.

i think it sounds pretty good for what it is...like you mentioned its a demo..a main idea.. add more stuff to it..and belch out those vox and it'll be pretty sweet. I would have to agree with the others that you are not bad by any means...better than me!! But I also claim to be solely a drummer..haha, keep up the good work.

It's really noticeable that you're keeping it down so as not to disturb anyone. Sort of sounds a bit half hearted, but your voice sounds very good otherwise. I know the feeling, as I have the same problem of being heard, so I don't really sing much nowadays and have developed a more talk-singing style to try to compensate. Actually I don't sing much now anyway and tend to do instrumentals instead, but then I love instrumentals anyway so it's not really a problem for me.

 Maybe you could find some sort of effect to add that will give your voice a bit more of a convincing edge, even if you have to sing quietly (I love effects on anything!). Or maybe try the talk-singing style,as I've heard it work to brilliant effect on many professional artists recordings. It's just a different approach ;)

Good luck,
dreamer7:D

I liked it.Now if you played ten songs in a row where you sang that way I might feel a little differently.

Yeah, that's one thing I try to steer clear of. I like changing it up!

I actually re-recorded the vocals and added a few things here and there.....

I'll post a link to the new version when I get home.

I said fuck it, and went ahead a got a bit louder......still not full-force, cause I just don't feel it with acoustic material.

Ok, here's the "better" version. At least it's not as low of encoding quality!

Is the singing any better? Is that the kind of projection some of you mentioned in the upper range?

That's exactly the projection I was talking about. The double vocals make the chorus sound alot better. Just get it a liiiiiiiiiiittle tighter. I like this take of the song alot better. Still a bit pitchy at the beginning of the song. Good job man, you are making real progress.

I like the shaker sound also. heh.

Also, guitar needs to come up. Vocals are way out in front.

It's hard to say if the singing is better because the mixing is different. The vocals in the mix do sound better in part's but I can't say it's from the singing. Did you know that the the volume in this mix is way lower than the first? Forget to bring the gain up? I'm crying cause I just had foot surgery and it's about 25 feet to the amp from the computer:p

This is far from bad, in fact it is darn good but I'd say you could still improve it with more projection and passion in the singing.

Yeah, I wasn't too sure about the chorus doubling.

I really want to put some REAL guitar down and make it more "rock".

Acoustic really does make it harder for me to "open up". Like someone mentioned before, adding some distorted guitar and bass will help fill it in.

Plus, the song I'm hearing in my head is signifigantly heavier.

Too bad I can't record drums worth a crap!!

Anyone willing to put down some spiffy percussion!?

Your voice has a lot of potential, and for under three hours I think that's pretty good. I like the song a lot too, and I think if you can get an entire band and a really well produced version of that song it'd be great. It's a lot more musically good than technically good, but there is potential with your voice... it's a lot better than my first few times recording my voice.

I think you have potential, so no... you don't suck.
