I have just prepared a computer for single DAW use. It runs Windows XP and will never access the internet or run anything, other than FL Studio and associated applications. These include software for my Novation MIDI controller and the DSP for my sound card. It is going to be a machine entirely dedicated to recording and processing audio. Is there any reason at all why I should install the Windows XP Service Packs?

Thanks in advance

service packs are for more than security.
they are BUG fixes.
so yes install 'em...

I would install the service packs, but perhaps not every single update as they come out. The service packs are usually very stable, and I have never had any issues installing them on my DAW. However, just like anything else that you are gonna put in your DAW, do some research, find out what others are experiencing, and then do some more research. Look into IT forums and see if anybody had any issues. I'm very careful about what I put on my DAW, but the service packs are on that short list.

Thank you. Well, I did some research and posted this in another place - and the answer seems to be a unanimous: Install 'em.

So I will.

At first I assumed they were mostly networking bugs and it turns out they are - but a few Windows stability issues as well.

I have XP pro running and I have installed up to service pack 3 using discs, no other updates at all as the machine is never connected to the internet. Service pack 3 did in fact fix a small bug in my firewire dropping out for some reason.

If a service pack seems to address a specific issue you're having, then go ahead and install it. If it runs fine without, I wouldn't bother.

My DAW is XP SP2, and it's unlikely to be upgraded any time soon.

Here's another vote for installing them. By all means at least up to SP2, which was a HUGE upgrade for XP. But I would say go up through SP3.

I keep service packs on my external USB drive. So I went 2, then 3. I tried to install 1 but the dialogue said SP1 was already installed, so it must have been one of the later XP releases I had used. All patched and ready to go now... Thank you.
