I am to the point at which I need some 'real' monitors. I am recording through my computer and I assume that I will be using the outputs from my Delta soundcard to go into the monitors. How will I know if I need a passive or active monitor for this? Will the computer power the monitors?

Thanks,
D.

No, the computer won't power the monitors. Active monitors have their amplifiers built into them. Passive monitors require you to purchase a separate amp to drive them with the signal from the soundcard. That's why they are usually less expensive than an active set.

If you have no amp, then you need active. (or an amp and passive )

There have been a few debates re active vs passive here, try using the search function on the BBS.

I went the active route, straight out from my Aardvark into the JBL LSR25Ps.

JBL LSR25P is a great active monitor. ~$500/pr I heard Full Compass had 'em for $450.

Dammit i started that Full compass rumor....now i see that 450/pr is for B stock:mad:

still they can be had for under $500 pr.....

B Stock

These things are built tougher than cinderblocks!!!

Maybe you could scratch 'em, or dent the grille, or put a nice dent in the tweeter, but these things are like big rocks. I would not want to be anywhere nearby if you dropped one...

But I prolly wouldn't buy B-stock without seeing and listening...

Just found out about these the other day, I would not buy monitors without giving these a listen:

Mackie HR624

They're pretty damn new, though, (not even mentioned on the Mackie website???)
