hey. i just purchased a roland VS2400CD digital mixer and now im shopping around for monitors. do i need digital monitors to get the most out of my new system? or could i use a pair of regular Yorkville YSM-1's and still get a pretty decent sound. i dont have too much money to spend but i'd like to get something that will give me good clarity for when im mixing

I have a pair of Roland digital monitors and guess what, I bought another pair of analog ones pretty soon. Digital monitors eliminate the wire hiss and mild hums etc, but for the price you pay for a digital monitor , you can buy a really really better sounding analog monitor pair. So what do you want? Style or Quality? Decide for yourself.

I never did understand digital monitors. What is the advantage of putting one of the most critical pieces of digital audio, the convertors, in the box with a speaker and an amp?

There's no way to upgrade any part of the system! Need to upgrade to a 5.1 surround system? Sorry. Want to try new speakers without having to buy a new amp, too? Sorry. Want to upgrade your convertors while maintaining the clarity of an all digital path to the monitors? Sorry.

Maybe I'm missing something.

im not necessarily looking at the ysm1s but i just used it as an example for a cheap monitoring system. i found some samson resolve 65a's for a decent price so i might go with those

I belive the yorkvilles are quite a step up in quality compared to the samsons. Don't skimp on monitors!

You shouldn't skimp on the monitor part of your setup.

What is your budget?

If you are sending the signal from the analog outputs of your DAW or Mixer to the Monitors, then there wont be any meaning converting the signal back and forth to analog and digital. If you have a complete digital setup, then the digital monitors may eliminate the typical analog hiss. In my studio the only place the signal is in analog is from my mic to my preamp, then everything becomes digital, so I dont want to convert the signal back to analog. I use optical cables for my monitors and after doing all these fancy stuff, I could eliminate the hiss, BUT still the monitors are not worth spending that much money, better get a HR624 or HR824 if you can't affort that go for a low end, but quality ones, like the YSM1s or Behringer Truth. They are pretty good for the price you pay. (much better than Roland digital monitors)

im looking to spend about 600 max on monitors. the reason i asked about the samson is cuz i saw them for like 470 and it didnt seem to bad

I always figured digital monitors were more gimmick than function. For the money try these instead:

Event TR8-N Powered Monitors

I have the little brothers - the 5" powered monitors and they are fantastic. The 8" monitors will give you a better bass response.
