I'm not sure that a mixer is what you're after. It doesn't make sense to do any mixing to your monitoring source since it'll screw up what you're hearing vs. what's actually been recorded.

If your soundcard has multiple I/O's, then I'd think it would have some sort of line out that you could connect to your monitors. That way you can monitor the ACTUAL mix.

You might need an amp to drive your monitors or headphones...but a mixer is not what you need. Your multiple I/O soundcard IS your mixer.

Oh good to hear. I just figured like so many other things in this feild, bypassing the use of a physical mixer would be too good to be true. I would like to, in the future though, find myself a couple really nice neve mic pre's. But thanks again for answering my question!

So I'm building a computer-based multitrack recording studio, small but efficient. In addition to my super computer and sound card (24bit with multiple i/o's) should I invest in a small mixer to be used for monitors and headphones, things like that? Or should I just purchase a sound card with more i/o's and just further utilize the multitracking software (probably cakewalk or vegas)?

Do you plan on using any microphones or recording more than one instrument at once? If so you still need a preamp, whether it be in the form of a mixer, or the ever popular ART tube preamp. If your using a soundcard that has a preamp built-in, then you could get away without a mixer/preamp.
