im gettin either the echo layla 24 or the delta 1010 (cant decide).....mostly doing analog recording.......all i have for a preamp is a midiman audio buddy and i have no mic yet........do i need a mixer? or just a better preamp? or just a good mic? yes im sure u can tell im new to recording.....any advice would be very helpful. thanks a lot!!!!!

how much can you spend on a mic and pre? Iwould first picl up a few sm-57's though, you'll always use them.

You will need a preamp for every microphone that you plan to record simultaneously.

I see that you are looking at 8 in/out cards, do you want to record 8 channels at once?

primarily im buying the card to record myself buut i want to keep the option open of recording any of my friend's band in the future so i figure i should go all out and get 8 ins and outs........i know ill need a preamp for every mic but how good does the preamp have to be? mine is like $100 (audio budy) and i havent used it yet so i dont know how good it sounds

The Audio Buddy should sound pretty good.
To do a basic high quality demo you dont need super expensive preamps, the pres on a small Mackie are more than good enough.

Yes, you need a mixer

To record a band, you will need a mixer.

But a smaller card for now, since you're just oging to record yourself, and get the stuff you need (mixer, bigger card) when you need it.

There a lot of learning that needs to happen, (eq, compression, mixing, etc.) before you'll be able to exploit the other equipment, so svae your money. If you wait, it will just be cheaper, and you'll know exactly what you need.

what advantage would i get using an external mixer as opposed to logic audio's mixer?

It's not so much that the external mixer will give you an advantage over Logic's mixer, it's just that the most economical way to get 6 or 8 preamps is to buy a small mixer. Mixing in software actually has big advantages, for example automation.

You are only going to need all those preamps when you want to record a band, especially if they use live drums.

i need to know whether to get logic audio or cubase.........everyone says logic has a high learning curved but ive worked with logic audio version 3.6 to do analog audio it was easy.......are the new versions harder?

You'll also be able to do submixes if you have a mixer - ie, if you have 10 sound sources, but only 8 inputs, you can mix a few of them on the mixer to bring it down to 8. Always a shame when you have to do that, but it is better then just not being able to record all the sound
