alright heres the deal..i just bought a pair of bx8's and i love them..now on to the other stuff

i record rap vocals..and use only one channel at a time..so my question is, do i need a mixer, or should i just go with a preamp? my impression is mixers are generally used if u have a lot of things going like midi and multiple mics...since i use no midi and have one mic do i really need a mixer?

now i do like hardwhere EQ controls...but i CAN just do thaton my software (Audition). Is there a big diffrence? iv noticed that mixers are more expensive and have worse quality preamps then what i can buy for that money..im trying to stick to 200 or below..i dont have a good mic yet..but that will be my next step..but its gonna be a condensor, so im gonna have to have phantom power on this unit..

any suggestions?

thanks

Preamp.

PreSonus TubePre

if you are doing only one track at a time, go for a good preamp. i bought the PreSonus TubePre earlier this year for about $100 and it sounds amazing for vocals, keyboards, bass, guitar, everything. it really warms up your sound and gives you the boost that you need to record. very low noise as well. it also has 48V phantom power for condenser mics. best of all it has a real 12AX7 tube, makes all the difference in the world.

[Rant]Sorry but with respect that's just marketing hype and bullshit. It's a starved plate design, it's not a proper tube preamp. Lobbing a 12AX7 into the circuit doesn't make it a proper tube design, it just means they can use meaningless terms like 'warm' and 'vintage' in their marketing literrature. And of course the preamp gives the mic a 'boost', it's a gain device, that's its job.[/Rant]

Seriously I'm glad you like the pre but don't buy into the 'tooob' bullshit with budget preamps. Or if you have bought into it don't encourage others to do the same.

In that price range the solid state pres are generally much better. I usually recommend the DMP-3 but if you just want one channel and eq I'd go for the Joe meek 3Q.
