I am only interested in recording a couple of acoustic guitars and a couple of vocal tracks on my songs. I am using a very simple mixer (no tweaking, no effects, 4 channels input and one output) this mixer is hocked up to my computer then I modify the mix using Cool Edit pro.
I need to get modify the different tracks before they’re mixed on my pc (cause I won’t be able to edit tracks separately by then). For e.g. I want the guitar track to sound different than the vocal track.

So Do I need a mixer to do that? Or is it possible by cool edit?
If yes, is Mackie 1202-VLZ pro the best option? Mackie CFX12? Or?

I haven't used a mixer since I switched over to the computer in 2001. I record one track at a time into the multitracker in CEP 2.1 (or1.2a, depending on how I feel)...then, yeah....tweak each track to your heart's content in the multitrack session BEFORE you mixdown.

CEP's a lot more than a wave editor. I've recorded up to 30 "analog" tracks in one tune...never had any need for more up to this point.

BTW - You didn't mention which version of CEP you're using....obviously, you have to have a multitracking version.

Is this close to what you were asking?

Record each instrument in different tracks (Go to multitrack view) Now you can mix, add effects, edit and do all stuff in CEP. You dont have to buy a mixer for this, with that money you can get a good soundcard, that is more important than a mixer:)
