Whose idea was that to create a spindle of wire on the posts anyways? I see that on most new guitars in the store and thought I was doing it wrong. I go the other extreme and pull the once stretched string all the way through and turn the peg maybe once or twice, and I rarely have any tuning problems that take more than two minutes to fix..

All guitars stay in tune... BREAK IN THE STRING. Once you put them on tune it, and then fret at the 12th with it in ur lap and stick your fingers under each string one at a time at the pickups and pull it up about an inch to stretch it out. Do this for each string for about 10 seconds each string twice. Then tune it again. Play for a while and do that same thing again and tune once more. You may want to do that again the next day as well, after that the guitar will go out of tune slightly, I only tune mine every two days unless im recording.
When I'm recording, I retune after every take. Live, I just don't give a crap unless I have an extended break. Hey, it was good enough for Hendrix, and his tuning would just go nuts during a set. No one seemed to mind.
The best guitar for under 500 for tuning stability is believe it or not a custom-made Route 101Solimar with a fixed bridge. I have played 3 of these things extensively (one with the trem, which was also pretty good) and I was always shocked at how well they held tuning and intonation. You can buy one custom starting at around 350 from their web site. www.route101guitars.com
if you want to try the lubing solution, you may want to try a high quality bicycle chain lube on the string slots. tri flow is a wet-type lube that has teflon, while white lightning is wax based and dries up in an instant (kinda hard to apply though).
