is it necessary for me to have to run the outputs of my soundcard into the inputs of my mixer. i don't really know what the purpose of this is. please enlighten me.

You can run the outs straight into a pair of powered monitors if you want.

Or run them into the tape in or 2TR in of your mixer. The advantage of using the mixer is you can then route out to monitors via CR out, you can create a headphone mix, and you can route to tape out & send to an amp...endless possibilities

See "Using a Mixer With a DAW" from EQ magazine, first in the list on my Articles page:

Excellent information, Ethan.

E.W.,

I'm so glad you posted that and gave the link to your site. Excellent material and I had just been wondering about those exact questions in my own situation, that your article addressed (i.e. how to wire up to a mixer, how to record without effects, how to monitor while recording, etc.).

THANKS!

Todd

Todd,

Thanks. Since these same questions come up here all the time I finally wrote that article for EQ so I could post a link instead of having to answer the same stuff over and over. :D
