I'M IN THE PROCESS OF BECOMING A PRODUCER.JUST BECAUSE I WANT TO PRODUCE TRACKZ.DOES THAT MEAN I GOT TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY AND READ PIANO AND KEYBOARD.I DON'T KNOW IF I GOT TIME TO REALLY LEARN HOW TO PLAY.DO THE PRODUCERS THAT PRODUCE TRACKZ KNOW HOW TO PLAY KEYBOARD,OR IS THEIR A WAY THEY MANIPULATE SOUND TO MAKE IT SEEM LIKE YOU KNOW HOW TO PLAY KEYS.RESPECT....
 
no but you gotta have some kind of idea of what you want. But it would be great to know how to. There's also a dj fingaz from tha bay.
 
No you don't have to "learn" to play keys. Timbaland and Dre never learned to play keys. But like Jamal pointed out you have to have a strong idea of what you want and how to get that out of your equipment.

I never learned to play keys, but then I know the different tones like the back of my hand, so it's not difficult for me to play what I want.
 
The most important skill..

...is to learn to replace certain letters in certain words. For example:

  • the becomes "tha"
  • the plural 's' is usually replaced by 'z', as in "trackz" and "skillz"
  • anything ending in 'er' now ends in 'a' - see "gangsta," "hata," and "playa"

If you can do that, you are already a producer and just don't know it! Forget about learning how to read, play, or write music - these skills are useless!
 
It seems to me this question is much like asking - Do I need to learn how to play an instrument to be a musician?

It may not be required to play keys, but you need to understand something about music theory and the relationship between melody, harmony and rhythm - this would normally equate to skills on some melodic insrument.

A producer is involved in everything from arrangments to harmonies to grooves to hiring studio musicians to , etc. etc. etc. How can one communicate with singers and musicians if you can't speak the language??

Music is much more than hitting a play button on a groove box!!!

That makes no sence. "I want to learn how to make music but I really don't want to take the time to learn how." You may be able to teach yourself after some time, but between then and now you have a hard road ahead.
 
I don't have time for all this practicin' and learnin' chords and melodies, just give me some money and fame. Wait, I don't need the hassles that go along with fame like Shugg Knight tryin' to put a cap in my ass..... just give me the bling. Yo' forget the money.... too many accountants wantin' a piece of me......just give me the young nasty groupies and let me get my swerve on !
 
If nothing else, there is one thing you should learn about keyboards...

...where the CAPS LOCK key is located. ;)

Heh...yes it would! But see I'm not a producer so I can't manage all those alternate spellings.

All I can do is play keyboards dammit! Someday I'll get my shit together...
