Do I already have PreAmp/D.I.?

I have been learning about, and becoming more puzzled by, D.I. Boxes for Bass guitar and Pre-Amps for Vocals.

I have an Edirol UA-5 external USB soundcard/thing to go into my computer with Cakewalk HS XL.

I have 2 questions :

1) Since my UA-5 has Phantom power, does this mean I don't need a vocal pre-amp? (I'm using a condenser Mic : MXL V67)

2) Since my UA-5 has a "High Z" input on it, does this mean I don't need a Direct Box for the Bass guitar?

This has come up because the bass is coming in totally gutless (don't have a bass amp) and I'm having to double the bass track to get it going like it should. Maybe thats normal.
Will a simple direct box satisfy better? I like simple (and cheap). I don't need Rolls Royce to do the job of a Hyundai right?

Thanks

Basically, the pre-amp on the Edirol should work for any condenser microphone, and the Hi-Z input should do just fine for a bass guitar. I have no idea about the quality of the pre amps, but theoretically speaking, it should be just fine.

If you don't like the sound you're getting, an Audio Buddy would provide you two channels of pre-amplification, with Hi-Z input for instruments. I have the same (or similar) pre-amps in my USB Duo, and they sound very nice.
