yes i know the topic has been covered before but i'll be buying one of the 2 in the next 2 days....
i have a Adk A51Tc mic and i want to have a nice upfront vocal sound with out the need of EQ.

i will be tracking Hiphop,R&B and neo-soul artist.. no guitars or anything at this moment, the pre will be used only for vocals
i will be tracking to a delta 1010 to Nuendo and sx

in MY case which would be the better pre to get?
which pre has a more open upfront sound?

Buy the DMP3, it has twice as many channels as the VTB-1.

I like the DMP3 with two channels. Sounds great stereo micing acoustic guitars with MXL 603s or MC012s and sounds great matched with a tube mic for vocals. I think it sounds smooth and creamy.

1 or 2 pres really isn't a major thing.. i don't have 2 of the same mics so i won't be doing anything stereo(YET)
so the DMP3 is the better buy ha.. i'ma trust you guys and get it

at $60/channel , the DMP3 cant be beat........

then you can get a art tube pre for a different flavor...the OPL goes for $59........

i've never been fond of ART

Ok, now I see vocals only...shoulda put my glasses on......

Ill go with DMP3 still since you dont like Mr. Art......i think crawdad has at least one tune in the clinic with a a51 thru a dmp3....shoot him a PM, he will be able to tell you which one.....

but one more suggestion......Joe Meek......i sometimes use my v67G thru a VC3Q and its a sweet sound with the built in compression.....give Alan Hyatt a holler and he may be able to tell you when the new line is coming out......

i've used art stuff before and i just don't like art's quality for vocals..
i want this $500 mic to sound as clean as i can get it on a budget...
Gidge, do you know what model A51 crawdad has? i'll hit him up tomorrow if you don't know. i have the a51TC model.

I voted for the DMP3, but I'd also recommend a Joe Meek. I use the VC6Q and love it. A little bit more 'change' though. In your price camp, DMP3 all the way.

my opinion

save up some more for a RNP...YOU WON"T BE DISAPPOINTED...lots of gain, clean to an extent but adds a lil to the lower mid range. as always FMR makes something that competes with things that are 5 times its price...the only drawback are gain steps are in increments of 6...but if ur looking for the best sonic quality...that is definitly it unless u wanna spend 1000-2000 on a pre...

c9-2001,

I record a fair amount of rap vocals as well. Either the DMP3 or the VTB-1 will do a great job for you. If you've got to make a choice between the two, the DMP3 is hard to beat at $119 for 2 channels. Even if you only use one channel at a time, there will come a day that two will be needed. Each pre has a different but quality sound. In my own tests, I've found the DMP3 to be more "forward" sounding. The DMP3 seems to permit all of the high end info to pass. The VTB-1 is a neutral, but more reserved pre.

If I could analogize the pres to women (without meaning to be offensive to any women on the site). The DMP3 is an extrovert and is the quintessential beauty. She's gorgeous, knows it and flaunts it. It's difficult to walk into a room without noticing her. She's just there and always on!

The VTB-1, on the other hand is equally beautiful, just not in such an outward way. She's demure... modest, reserved. Outwardly she's reserved, but when you get to know her (and her tube) you find all sorts of incredible and pleasing complexities that keep you in love with her. VTB-1 is akin to the kind of woman who doesn't ask for any special attention, but can't stop attention from coming her way. She keeps unfolding before your eyes... err, we where talking about pres right?

Either way, both are great choices and would complement each other well in a recording rig. The one advantage that the VTB-1 has in terms of connections is that it has two outputs (and xlr and a 1/4"). This is helpful if you monitor with a mixer rather than in your soundcard, because you can have two simultaneous outputs, one going to the recorder, the other going to your mixer to monitor while recording.

i do monitor with a mixer vs the delt.. but with the dmp3 i should be able to get a splitter

rustyfingers, if you have a local guitar center you can get the dmp3 for 119 no where online

Maybe refer them to the several threads here where people have reported getting it for $119 at GC and ask them to match the price.

I remember seeing someone say that they were able to get the DMP for $119 over the phone by calling a Guitar Center.

that could have been me, i called the san marco, cali, store, got the last one, just pick a store and call, and if you have a prob. with the price, tell the salesperson to call, ed diaz at the san marco store (i think it was diaz, ed for sure) they will match the price without giving you a hassle. I think i remember him saying that the stores are trying to get rid of them. i am expecting mine to show up any day now.

Hmmm. Interesting analogy. But when you really boil it all down, they're both really in the same category: low-maintainance women you pick up at the welfare line or the trailor park because you can't afford to take out the rich ones who date guys with big wallets and fancy cars. :D

But you're smart enough to understand that these girls are just as good and useful as the rich ones when you turn out the lights or put a bag over their heads.

Actually Chess, I was thinking more along the lines of there are quality women at all points on the economic scale. Greatness has no pricetag.

Now if we're talking Nady, Rolls, Behringer, Alesis, PreSonus Blue Tube pres, and the litany of other low cost but poor performing stuff then these would be more of what you described. ;)

But the VTB-1 and DMP3 are low-cost, but quality as you can obviously attest.
