can you guys give me some input on the m-audio dmp3 right now im using a behri mixer with those pre's, is the dmp3 any good, and if so how? will i notice a big differenc ein sound quality.i will be using in with a mxl990 mic

from what ive heard it is a very clean pre and worth it for its small price

I have one and love it for the price. It's probably the best pre for that price range IMHO.

Just do a quick search... there's a bunch of really long threads regarding this preamp.

Collective wisdom says no you will not. The difference will be slight, and maybe even imperceptible unless you have a full mix. Don't expect a night and day difference with only a couple guitar tracks and a vocal.

Actually, I noticed quite a difference on stereo acou guit tracks. The DMP3 high end is much smoother (not strident), and the stereo field is much more pronounced when listening back on monitors--that blew me away because I didn't know preamps could affect the depth and span of the stereo field.

Acou guit is my main application for the DMP3, and with only two tracks you can definitely tell the difference.

With a decent monitoring setup and halfway educated ears you'll hear the difference, especially with stereo micing as pointed out by TD. I have one, and it sounds much nicer thant it's price would suggest.

I recently posted a thread JUST ABOUT THIS QUESTION! Yeah that was the thread that gave me all the neg rep points . I also upgraded from Behringer mixer pres, and I said I did hear an improvement, but not as great as I expected. I did a full mix with it but only then you'll hear a good deal of improvement. Very nice and transparent, and for the money, I'd say you can't really go wrong...
But I've also heard good things about the EHX tubepre? Can't give any input on that one though...

i just bought me a soundcraft M8, i like it, its a step up from my old studiomaster,
but i need two more channels, for the overheads of my drums,
so i was thinking of getting the dmp3,
just one extra question:

can you "stere0 link" the two channels, or do you just have to make sure the buttons are on the exact same settings?

It's been my experience that when comparing the mic pre's in my old Behr UB1622FX and the DMP3, there was a noticable difference. It wasn't an "in your face" difference but to me it was something I could hear. The DMP3 gave a cleaner sound with slightly better definition. I took a demo model home and did this comparison quite some time back. I recorded a solo/acoustic guitar using MXL603's in x/y config which was the deciding factor. I don't care for it as much for vocals but acoustic instruments, I really like it. I've also had good results on trombone, trumpet, banjo and acordion. Its' not fancy but it's one of the few budget products out there that aren't packed with bogus or hype selling features.

I bought a pair with no regrets after which the Behr mixer became strictly a monitoring station and effect send/insert point.

Yeah, you'll have to set the same settings on both channels since there's no stereo link.
