Sup all, I posted a topic at the Official Tascam Forum a
few days ago about deciding on
the D8B or 02R96, but am now leaning towards grabbing a
couple of DM-24 units...

I figured investing the additional money towards the
outboard gear would be better than dumping it all on
2 D8B's or 2
02R96 boards...

Plus, other than owning an Euphonix R1, there is no
other dedicated 48 track HDR setup available that could
track 96K simultaneously, so it wouldn't really make
sense investing into the 02R96... Then I would have to
invest into separate 96K converters to
convert my audio tracks using the D8B...

I was also disappointed about hearing the Iz Technology
Radar 24 only doing 8 tracks @ 96K & 6 tracks @
192K, so I'm thinking about adding 2 MX2424 units to
the cascaded DM-24 setup...

Anyway, I know there are limitations with everything, but
I wanted to ask what are the key disadvantages of the
DM-24?

5.1 Monitoring
Automation/Recall Storage
etc...

The Mackie D8B looks tempting, but I hear the sound
quality is too digital compared to the DM-24...

It would be nice to have discrete control over all 48
tracks though, but having 32 dedicated touch sensitive
faders, 64 mixing channels, & nice warm converters
should replace that issue

I have to leave and will be back tomorrow, so
please respond if you could assist...

Thanks :)

I looked into tons of digital boards before I bought my DM24, and I have to say the I am glad I did. At the time the D8B was about 10K and with the cards I needed it would ahve been closer to 11. Since that time mackie has dropped the price dramatically, but added no new features.

Here is a quick list of features, not all-inclusive and maybe not exactly what you are looking for though

Pros for the DM-24
16 mics pres, D8B has 12
smaller footprint
Cheaper
Surprisingly good onboard FX
No Plugins to purchase :)

I have used the D8b a little, and to my ears I like the DM-24 better. I would probably look at the 01V96 now, that wasn't out when I was shopping.

It all depends on what you need.

A DM-24 with a 24 track recorder (HD-24, MX2424, HDR24) is awesome, especially when you get transport controls working through midi.

Add a MOTU 2408 and you have one of the most diverse rigs ever...and I like it that way

Thanks for the response :)

Yeah, after careful consideration and reading through several responses at the Tascam forum, the DM-24 is tough to beat in it's price range...

I would have to further invest the major bucks into the 02R96/DM2000 to exceed what the DM has to offer...

I'm going to grab a few DM boards for the time being until the studio reaches the Capital demand for the big boys...
