Hey sup? I have built myself some DIY monitor stands that I saw someone else on this sit make...They worked out great(made out of PVC and plywood.)by the way thanks for the idea. Problem...how high in relevence to my ears or sweet spot should they be? Should the lows be at my ears or the highs or a happy medium? Thanks for all the input an hours of entertainment!

Peace

You want the monitors on a median plain with your ears when you're in your listening position. Basicly you want the monitors and your head to form an equilateral triangle with the monitors aimed at your head.

Voodoo,
I would be interested in building my own monitors too. Could you give us more info on how you did'em? And where did you found the plan? Parts? Photos?!

Peace,
Beathoven

This is someone elses pic and idea ...i am claiming none of it. I am glad they posted it though...it took me about 15 minutes to build them.

Monitor Stands

They're mine, thanks. The 4" PVC is 36" long. The bottom piece of plywood has little rubber feet. The pipes are filled with sand to tame any resonance and makes them very sturdy. One bag of "playsand" will do the pair.

Where's the thread for the instructions?

These look wild! Is it just a drainpipe filled with sand? Or am I looking for something more complicated here?

Just an additional thought...

Buy some of that black rubber shelf liner (kind of meshy looking) to place under the actual monitor speaker. Gives it some grip in case the stand/speaker is bumped and a limited amount of damping.

Dr. X, Simple as that. 12"x12" plywood squares with a toilet flange centered on each one. Glue the PVC pipe into the bottom one, fill with sand, glue the top on.

all props go to Flatrock...thanks for the additional sand thing too. I knew I missed something.

WOW! Funny thing.........

....I JUST made some stands like these last week. I got the idea off of some guy in another forum. I believe it was NYCdrew. He had a couple of shots he took of his and i was in need of some stands since i just picked up a pair of Event 20/20bas powered speaks from a guy who (get this) gave them to me in exchange for helping him out on writing some songs and whatnot. He had em laying around and had no use for em. Thats another story though.

I made my stands out of the same material as Flat above. PVC, toilet flanges, and wood. In my case, I bought some fairly nice wood I got at the hardware store (Menards). It's a stair cut into four pieces essentially and sanded round all the way around for looks. The PVC is put together with PVC glue and filled with sand.

There is a trick here though. I used the nuts that countersink themselves when tightening the bolts (see below pics). I did this because the speaks are heavy so I wanted them bolted, not screwed. The trick is....since the holes are drilled and wood mounted, if you are not careful the top and bottom wont match. They will appear twisted from each other. Do one end and lay it on the floor. Put the glue on the other end and place push it on using the floor the make sure they are even. Does this make sense?!?! I'm terrible at explaining things like this.

Then I took the bolts out and put some RTV gasket stuff around the toilet flange for zero sand leakage, put the wood back on and rebolted. Now I filled with sand. Made sure to bounce it up and down a few times to let the sand settle and put RTV on the top toilet flange and rebolt.

Hope this makes sense!

Here's some pics.

Here they are in use. You may also notice the grey squishy rubber cabinet stuff to keep them from vibrating off. Someone also mentioned this above.

Here's the top.
You'll notice the sanded edges and the counter sunk nuts. They are flay on top with 4 "fangs" that get driven into the wood.

A shot of the bottom....bolt heads and washers. I also put feet (that you can't see) under there.

Thats it!

They are very sturdy too! Don't let the PVC fool you! My speaks are heavy as they are amplified and the PVC holds em steady as can be. BTW these are 38" tall assembled.

Hope this helps someone!

Toilet flange?

These are fantastic but what on earth is a toilet flange?

Longsoughtfor:

COOL! I appreciate that actually as I'm usually more on the recieving end of advice than on the giving end, being so new to the recording world and all. Let me know if you need anything else.....(pssst!...I won't even you give you the "copyright lecture you usually get!!;) :D :p ) Thanks again!

Dr X,

I'm not absolutely sure. I believe a toilet flange holds the toilet to the floor....I think it's above that wax donut thing. I don't know for sure but I DO know it's a piece of PVC, usually round with four to six holes in it for screws. It's always foound near the PVC section along with all the misc. PVC items. They're about 2 bucks.

BTW,

Paint and materials including nicer wood came in at a cost of under 50 bucks. I could have skimped on the wood a little and it would have been less. Make sure to get the thick PVC. I say this because one place I went to had really THIN PVC. Also, for the record, I used 3" PVC and it worked out fine....the 4" seemed like overkill and the 3" came in 5 foot lengths instead of one big 10 foot that wouldn't fit in my car.:D

It makes you wonder whether all these hardware depot places should start advertising as hardware and studio constructions depots!...pvc pipes, knauff boards...dustbin bass traps...pipe insulation bass traps! It's hilarious!

PVC glue... be carefull with that stuff... lot's of nasties in there, really avoid breathing it.

Kevin.
