DIY Shock Mount

Hey, Moogjar !
Brilliant. It's fantastic. I enjoy this side of the home recording field. And your daughter got the rubber bands she really wanted !

But what if I wanted to hang my LDC upside down? ;)

I mentioned somewhere in the blog that a future tweak will be to cut a 1/8" wide gap on the inner ring to allow for compression. Then I'll use a stainless steel hose clamp, like this:

I just didn't go for it because at the moment I really don't need my LDC to be upside down.

Fantastic idea mate, you could prolly make a half dozen of those for the price of just a couple of shock mounts.

OK, great. I must have missed that, thanks MG.

Your DIY-ness is comendable...

but I agree, you could have bought a ready-made one and saved yourslef the time/effort. :D

I try to weigh out three things...my cost, time, and effort.
If I know I can imporve on at least two of the three, I'll go for the DIY over ready-made...otherwise it's not worth it. :)

I'm curious...will you be using the hose clamp right on the body of the mic?
You may want to add the clamp right away...because even though your mic is not upside down...if you bump/tip the mic stand, that mic is going to just pop right out of that mount.
the other thing that concerns me is the PVC...which is somewhat brittle. Are those screws and hooks glued in with epoxy or just screwed into the sides?

Very nice.

I recently did a similar project for my video shotgun mic.

I got a bit more bang-for-the-buck because the cheapest commercial one I could find was $75 and I spent all of $6.

Nothing wrong with PVC as long as you're a little careful with it....

For anyone looking for ready-made, inexpensive shockmounts...check out this eBay listing:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290464135887&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

He's got a few different types (check his eBay store)...all selling for under $15--shipped, and he's even taking offers on them.
There's a shotgun mic shockmount too:

Yeah...he's in Hong Kong...but he has decent Feedback and has sold a lot of stuff on eBay. I recently purchased items from a couple of similar Hong Kong sellers (nothing real expensive, so no big risk)...and the items were decent and a good deal for the prices.
The only downside is that it takes about 2-3 weeks before you get stuff from Hong Kong here on the USA east cost.

Yeah, for me it was more for the challenge whether I could build it or not. I do keep a balance between the cost, time and effort. Usually, cost won't be the issue as, IMO, 80 to 90 percent of the time, home built stuff will cost less than a commercially manufactured one. So for me it boils down to the time and effort aspect. If I think it will take too much of my free time or it's just way beyond my DIY skilss, I pass. The quality of the final product is another matter though. Sometimes, you're better off buying it off the shelf.

No, not on the body. Once I make that cut along the inner ring, the PVC will allow some flex enabling me to insert my mic further for a tight fit, then I'll use the clamp on the ring to compress it and lock it in place.

the other thing that concerns me is the PVC...which is somewhat brittle. Are those screws and hooks glued in with epoxy or just screwed into the sides?

They're not glued. I'm not too worried about the PVC. I clamped the heck out of those pipes while cutting both inner and outer rings and they didn't crack under the clamp's pressure. The LDC has some weight on it but isn't too heavy to cause the PVC to crack.

Thanks for the concern though. I might do my tweak over the weekend.

I know, that felt really cliche when I was typing it.... At least in saying it, I spared anyone else from feeling compelled to respond with such a cheesy joke

If I think it will take too much of my free time...

I never look at it as "free" time when I'm working on something.

I consider how much I would expect to get paid for that time if I was doing that DIY project for someone else...and then figure that into the cost comparison of a ready-made purchase.

But I know what you mean... :) ...sometimes there's knowledge to be gained DIY...so that's the bonus that offsets the work time/effort.
Even when I screw something up that I'm working on, I treat it like a lesson learned...and that covers the cost of my screw up! :D

Nice! :)

I used a toilet flange on mine. Asthetics could use a version 2.0.

Like it, what are the things you're using for frames for the pop filters?

They were odd little parts I found at Goodwill. If I recall correctly, they had something to do with cup holders. Sorry to be not helpful because it's unlikely you'll run across them unless you're very lucky. As soon as I saw them a light bulb went off. They swing down and you can have 1 or 2 on each side.

However, in this last few years I've hardly used them - the mic already has a pop filter and adding more takes away precious high end... if you can sing without goofups I think you're better without any.

Thank you san. Personally I love the idea of toilet components in the studio. Fits don't it?

BTW, who is in your avatar? Makes me think of Gerry Anderson.
