I noticed in the DIY thread below that many of you guys have DIY monitors. How could I go about making some good monitors? I have some good AIWA (I think that's the spelling) speakers from my old system that I'd like to make use of, but don't really know much about different drivers and such.

BTW, I guess technically, I'm talking about modifying my speakers, not building new ones. Thanks!

try www.partsexpress.com.........

you may take this as an insult, but I don't mean it that way, at all. aiwa is an above average electronics company, and has a long history in tape drives and drive mechanisms, but they are not known for their outstanding speakers.

parts exprss has some kits, and the latest one looks like it might be good for a monitor, it is in a mtm design. good monitors(or at least usable for mixing) start at about 500$ US per pair, and go up to whatever you have. you 10 grand to spend on monitors? no problem. got 20 grand? no problem.

there is also design software out their but you need to know stuff like the free air resonance of the drive and its freqrency curve, its power handling, and efficiency, at least.

Madisound also has a couple of monitor kits. If your cabinets are the right size, you can save yourself some money there. Otherwise, just start with one of the kits.
