I m all for two Dixie cups and several meters of string! Can't find a DAW for it though. :D

Thanks Paul.
I've already started collecting favorites in my browser. The file is now bigger than most of the others.
Despite the fun I have found loads of resources and i feel i'm making friends as i learn.
I mean yesterday I didnt even know there was such a thing as a rare earth magnet.

Paul just so you know i've put in an application to join mic builders and am awaiting a response.

Anybody got a clue Where i can get hold of some decent Magnets to build a ribbon mic please?
Uk based if possible thanks.

Depends -- how big of a microphone do you want to create? I would shoot for a 4 meter high microphone myself. :p

Google Edmond science.

Thanks Blue Jinn. Now I'm going to have to find more spending money...

if you want a dynamic you could get one of these:http://www.transsound.net/ (*click on dynamics and spend the weekend looking at these)
than get your self an appropriate one of these: EDCOR - Micrphone Matching Transformers (*lets say take the capsule from 700ohm-150ish 1:5 trany should do the trick)
than put it in the mic body from radioshack mic that you have laying around and (correct me if im wrong but...)you should have a working mic. i have not done this yet but like you said im gonna have to find some more spending money to try this. let me know if you do try it though!!
Cheers,
Dan

The above product is a ribbon motor made by Artur Fisher - DIYAC (DIY Audio Components).

For a limited time, Artur is offering a full ribbon kit, complete with machined stainless steel body, and options for transformer and shockmount.

DIYAC Ribbon Mic Kit One Time Offer - D.I.Y. Recording Equipment

I've been wanting ribbons for some time, so figured what the heck and ordered a pair. I decided to spring for a pair of Cinemag transformers, so should be an interesting project.
