FYI...January issue of "Recording" magazine has a do it yourself project{by Scott Dorsey} for moding {circut board} of various Chinese mics such as ..Various modles of...Marshall,ADK,Audix,Nady,Soundking,Yorkville...

Don

It's not so much a "mod" as he's using the mic casing and completely replacing the innards!
;)

(there is currently a thread about this on RAP - where he goes into more detail!)

Bruce, can you post a link to that thread? I'd like to take a peak at it.

Just search http://groups.google.com/groups?q=rec.audio.pro&hl=en. I forget the thread title, but the gist is that you desolder the capsule leads and take out the old board and transformer and replace it with a new board. There's supposedly $5 worth of parts on the basic model Chinese boards, so you upgrade the parts quality and use a cleaner circuit which is supposed to get an octave more low frequency extension, and dispenses with the cheap transformer for a good electronic balancing circuit derived from the Schoeps design. His biggest complaint for most of the Chinese mics has been that the transformers typically are not up to the job, so rather than give Jensen $100+, use $10 worth of parts or less to take care of the problem. The mod is designed for cardioid-only mics, though you can hook up a multi-pattern as omni. Dorsey says they sound better cardioid, though. Basically, you put in a board that Dorsey will sell you for $20 (making not a cent of profit on that) and maybe $25 worth of parts and you have a much better mic. I'd reserve this one for the bottom of the ladder models.

Also of interest would be Dave Royer's tube mod that was in Tape Op.

Thanks Bears. I've had a subscription to Recording (and all the other rags from the ministry of propaganda) for the last ten years and I read that article with great interest. I also subsribe to TapeOp and saw the tube mod by Mr. Royer. I have an Apex 420 that I don't have much use for and am contimplating one of these modifications. I'm just interested in what other folks have to say about it and any feedback from anyone who's done it already. Anyone done it yet?

I got a Marshall 2001p and Id love to mod it as it cant really hurt the sound(it sucks). However Im kinda a idiot when it comes to electronics and Im hesitant to attempt the mod myself. If anyone tries the mod please post how difficult it is and whether it should be attempted by someone with little or no electronic experience.I dont want to totaly trash it as I could sell it as I know someone who actually likes his 2001p.

Randy, if you'll send me your mic and buy the parts. I'll do the mod for you, for free. And if you dont mind me messing around with the new mic for a few weeks. I am interested in what the tube sounds like.

Email me if your interested. We can go from there.

I'm ordering the circuit board from Scott as I type this, I will also let you guys know how it turns out. I will record some examples before and after, but where should I put the files (on the web) for you guys to be able t olisten to them?
