DIY E-Drums from Yamaha DD-50

I'm planning to remove the trigger pads from an old Yamaha DD-50 and install 1/8 or 1/4 jacks for trigger input, and use the MIDI out from the DD-50 to input into my DAW. The DD-50 would basically be the "brain" of the drum kit and act as a MIDI controller in which I would assign various drumkit sounds through my DAW. I may be able to find some used drum pads pretty cheap, or build my own with some piezos, plywood, and rubber padding - build the rack from pvc? Does this plan sound feasible to anyone else?

You can do that, I've seen some info online about it. The DD50's pads are pretty bad, I used to have one.

You might want to check around and see if you can get a used DD55 cheap--it's a lot better machine and would save you some work. It's also set up to mount on a snare stand.
