Thats not far short of what I do. I don't put as much bow on the channel and I use a U section style rod most of the time but your good to go with that.

What are you using as your fence there? Is the router running off the inside of the rails?

The point I made earlier about using locating pins on jigs is to avoid that 1.5mm off centre sort of thing. If I was to build a jig based on what you have there I would Have a big block of wood at the end with a pin that would locate exactly on the centre line where the strap button would go. That way you have your far point fixed and it can't go anywhere. The rest of the jig would be about setting the rails for the router cut and the slope to give the angle. An arrangement of sliding adjustable fences that can be locked down when they are in place would be my choice. I like designing jigs and spend quite a bit of time building them and refining them. Prototypes in MDF production stuff in marine ply and melamine.

I'll try and take a few shots of some of mine when I have a chance. I have a load somewhere but not on this laptop.

Are you familiar with this site it's got tons of info for all instrument makers both pro and newbies. I don't have time to post there a lot but I know a lot of the folks that do. Stick to the rules and they are a good bunch. Register and browse the library you'll be hooked. ;) MIMF

You're correct there's a block screwed to th router base that is the same width as the blank. I'm a carpenter by trade, so I'm really into making jigs as well, and have a ton of them that are applicable to my trade. The locater pin is a great idea. That will take out the guesswork for sure. Most of my stuff I make up as I go along. Half the fun is figuring out how to do it.

The neck plays great. I was so worried that it would be a piece of shit. lol I feel a lot better now.

I've been lurking at the MIMF for a couple years. There's some great info in their archives. I registered back then, but I've never posted.

Nice one. No matter how many of the things you make nothing can beat the joy of hearing YOUR guitar being payed. Top drawer fella...

Whats the next project??

Thanks man.. That means a lot coming from you

The next project is a tele for my friend that played the clip. After that I want to build something like this.

They shouldn't present too many problems to you and you can refine your jigging and tooling while you do them. Think hard about maple finger boards unless you really want one. Nothing wrong with them they just present some challenges when finishing and setting up.. I hate working on them. You really need to be precise as you fret it and finish them to avoid having to do too much tidying up when setting it up. That looks like American black walnut on the link. Nice to work with. Have you used it on your cabinet work?

Sounds good man. Congrats on the successful build!

Thanks Tim

I know what you mean about the maple. I've re-fretted a strat neck before. I've built a couple teles, and still have the templates. This one will have a set neck so I might have to make a new body template to add some meat at the cutaway, but that's no big deal. The guitar on the link is beautiful with the walnut, and maple. I'm not sure yet what species I'd use. That guitar would be pretty regardless. I saw some really nice spanish cedar the other day.

What do you think of using poplar for the center section?

Thanks Tim

Is that a straight through neck neck pocket?

I have no real opinion on Poplar. There are several types sold as poplar and the quality and stiffness, density varies a lot. It works well for a lot of solid bodies. I wouldn't use it for a neck straight thru or otherwise, buts thats only because I think there are better timbers available. Choice of timber really is a personal thing, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. It just doesn't suit my style or sound.

A better question would be what sort of sound are you after? A very open question I agree but in general terms you can shoot for a certain type of sound and get close by using careful design and timber selection.

It is a neck through. Here's a link to the ric website. The reason I asked about the poplar was because I already have some. Just curious. Soundwise I'll probably go for a more vintage ric tone with toasters. I'll go check out lumber today.

No reason why poplar wouldn't work. My choice would be for a nice flame maple or even a maple with a skunk stripe laminate, but it's your choice. As far as tone with either maple or poplar your biggest factor will be the pickups you stick on her. The neck timber will have a influence but the pickups more so on that one. At least that would be my intuitive guess. Either way you'll be fine.

gorgeeeeeeous job

that large pic of the wood really shows the beauty of the wood grains. looks magnificently strung too, so precise with the bridge, and has a lot of punch and a solid look for great tuning. thats what caught my eye the simplicity yet the wood grain adds the fizzaz eye candy...

5 stars...

Thanks COOLCAT

Thanks for all of your input. It'll be a while before I commit on this one, but the more I look at the maple/walnut combo, the more I'm leaning that way.

Pickups shouldn't be a problem as long as I can find the covers. The other parts I can make.

Where would you get the templates for building that guitar? I would love to have a go at it.

I'm not sure yet. I might have to make them from photos. There's a Sam Ash here in Vegas that's listed as a Ric dealer. I seriously doubt they would have one in stock, but I might get some better info.

Oh alright. Damn. I was sort of hoping there would just be some lying around on the internet somewhere, ha.

I feel your pain. I had full size plans for the Jr. They were great for making the templates for the body, and neck.
