Indeed Bruce! If there was an actual "linear conversion", than the 24 bit audio's full dynamic range would enjoy a "linear conversion" to fit a 10bit dynamic range. Adding "perfect" would mean that you could do so without hearing horrible sonic artifacts. This would be known as "compression" in most cases. :)

But that is sematics! I jest!!! :D

Ed

Truncation is linear
Dithering + Truncation is not

(According to maths - according to your ears, maybe not)

You are so fuckin' dense, it isn't funny...

...actually, it's kinda sad.....

I suggest you pick up a copy of the digital bible -- John Watkinson's "Art of Digital Recording" -- and read it before you come here and post more BB (Boray Bullshit)............

Yes, it's sad that there are sick people like you who obvioulsy have got into your head that you are obligated to comment every post I write with a rude comment. If my posts are correct or not doesn't matter...

I told you before -- if you continue to post bullshit, you WILL be called on it...........

Well,

Boray you get what your hand calls for, YOU cannot comment aganst sonusman OR Blue Bear they are some of the best on this BBS, and from some of the other threads that you participated in I really dont think you know what you are talking about, when it comes to complicated issues that newbies dont know or understand about you shoud sit back and listen to the PROS explain it. Me Iam not a PRO, thats why my post count is low, I sit back and READ,,,,,,,,,,,,

...Hey Boray, why don't you just sit down, relax & watch the BBS ? And may be you learn something RIGHT. You showed kinda post a replies/thread trying to help out those questions, but don't have any idea what's goin' on. Your posts REALY need to be watched, cause they could bring missunderstood. Many people will be missleaded by your uncertain info... And we don't want that happens, NOT IN THIS RESPECTED BBS. That's why we keep an eyes on yours... We don't care if you're God in other BBS's, but here, you deffinitelly need more attitude adjusment...
:p

I haven't used dithering (unless cubase does it automatically)

It does, or at least it's easy to set. In 5.1, it's a big yellow button on the master mixer.

There are different dithering algorithms out there, I think. Cubase VST/32 had a more advanced one than 5.1. Don't know what's in SX - I don't wanna do the necessary WXP upgrade, that would force me to upgrade Encore too...

But if you're recording at 24 bits and dropping to 16 for the CD, only a very poor algorithm would give you a worse result than not dithering - Cubase's seems to be fine.

DON'T know how Cubase's dithering algorithm compares to what's in the editors - SoundForge, CoolEdit, etc. I really should find out, since I use both SF and Cubase. Anyone know?

BTW, Cubase keeps "quantize points" in its audio files, so maybe there is something you can do with quantizing - but whatever it is, it's pretty limited compared to midi. I've always snipped and dragged when parts don't line up.

well when i bounce in logic it automatically dithers as far as i know. But then thats logic. I guess i don't really know anything else.

Actually I think in Logic you need to put a Dither plugin on the master buss. I've only used the LE version but from reading the manual I think it's the same on the full version. LE doesn't even give you a dither plugin.
